This collection of Arina Tanemura's early short stories is fun and frothy, as well as a good reminder that not all stories need to run for hundreds or thousands of pages. After all, why put all that work in promoting and pushing a 2-book series when you can do so for a 22-book series? I have to admit that it's why in part I decided I wanted to read Arina Tanemura's "Short-Tempered Melancholic and Other Stories. On the whole, I enjoyed "Short-Tempered Melancholic and Other Stories.

Arina Tanemura has never reached the blockbuster levels of manga artists like Rumiko Takahashi or Naoko Takeuchi, but she has a decent-sized American fan base who enjoy her series Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne, Full Moon o Sagashite and The Gentleman’s Alliance Cross. Some of her earliest short stories, including her debut work, have been gathered into an anthology. All the stories in Short-Tempered Melancholic and Other Stories revolve around the blossoming of young romance: a teenage ninja agrees to give up her powers when her crush decides that she isn’t ladylike enough, a girl asks her best friend to impersonate her when she’s too shy to meet a penpal for the first time, another young lady always leaves her umbrella at home so she can share one with the guy she likes, and a girl has a secret crush on her best friend’s boyfriend.

Tanemura has a style that is quite distinctive from other shoujo artists. Her characters look like no one else’s. However, they do tend to look very much like each other. It seems as if Tanemura has about two designs for guys and three designs for girls, and if you’re familiar with her other series you’ve seen many of these figures before. They may have had different names, but the face and age and general personalities are unchanged.

The stories tend to be rushed, with little character development. I wouldn’t really recommend them unless you like quick, fluffy little shoujo stories. There are definitely some cute moments – I found myself smiling at the silliness of “This Love is Nonfiction,” in which two penpals arrange to meet up, but each asks a friend to stand in for them because they aren’t confident enough in their appearance. But you’ve surely read something very similar to these stories before.

Although I wouldn’t say the stories are new or novel, if you’re a fan of Tanemura’s later works it is fun to see where she began – and just how far her storytelling abilities have come since then.

well, if you are a Arina Tanemura fan its perfect to have in a collection but, just to warn you it is really cheesy but cute romance if you like chessy romance, the first story is pretty cute and you can tell it was pretty well thought out and it had a good concept, but i was confused at some of the times and didn't understand what was going on.
the second story is okay, i'd rather learn more about yuri's romance than her friends romance,i forgot her friends name.. but its my least favorite in the collection of stories.
Rainy Afternoons Are For Romantic Heroines, is in tie for my favorite, there's a huge twist i wasn't expecting, so for being only one chapter it progressed very well and was easy to follow along with.
The Style of the Second Love, is the other 1st favorite because its cute how he keeps trying for her, and you can really tell he is immature and it can be kinda annoying to read especially with the "Mana eraser"
so i would buy if you like romance/comedy, but if you don't like cheesy romance don't buy its not a must-have but, its nice to pick up once and a while.

Cute read and if you like Tanemura you will enjoy these short stories. May not be a definite buy, but if you have credits or extra money, I would suggest to pick it up.

Being a fan of Arina Tanemura's other works, I quickly snapped this volume up. Rather than have one volume devoted to one story, this manga collects several of her short stories. I'll review each one individually below:

Short-Tempered Melancholic: A story in two parts, the tale follows a modern day ninja by the name of Kajika. She's well known around her town for being valiant, but when her crush tells her to be more ladylike she tries to stop her ninja ways. Of course nothing is as it seems, especially when her childhood friend is trying to warn her about her crush & there's a rival group of ninja that is trying to steal her family's valuable secret weapon! The second part of the story is more of an "after" story that mostly surrounds Kajika's childhood friend & his attempts to woo her.

This Love is Nonfiction: This story is about a young girl named Yuri who sends her penpal a picture of her friend Karin, believing that she herself isn't attractive enough. Trouble ensues when her penpal wants to meet her & she has to have Karin stand in for her... only for it to seem that the pair are actually falling for each other!

Rainy Afternoons are for Romantic Heroines: Minori loves Takato but can't properly express herself other than asking him to share his umbrella on rainy days. However Takato has been rumored to be someone who is completely against the idea of falling in love...

The Style of the Second Love: Mana has a problem. She's completely infatuated with her best friend's boyfriend. She also has the problem of a hot younger guy that's competing for her attention. All of life's problems should be so terrible, shouldn't they?

Overall, I really loved this volume. Sure some of the stories were a little simplistic, but that's usually what comes of a one chapter story. All of the characters are incredibly likable, even the characters that are supposed to be "bad". For the most part I think that these single servings are just right & that too much would ruin the great flow that these stories have.
