This book combines real-world experience and best practices with down to earth advice, humor, and even cartoons to help you master the following ten objectives:Understand the basics of data modeling and relational theory, and how to apply these skills using CA ERwin Data ModelerRead a data model of any size and complexity with the same confidence as reading a bookUnderstand the difference between conceptual, logical, and physical models, and how to effectively build these models using CA ERwin's Data Modelers Design Layer ArchitectureApply techniques to turn a logical data model into an efficient physical design and vice-versa through forward and reverse engineering, for both top down and bottom-up designLearn how to create reusable domains, naming standards, UDPs, and model templates in CA ERwin Data Modeler to reduce modeling time, improve data quality, and increase enterprise consistencyShare data model information with various audiences using model formatting and layout techniques, reporting, and metadata exchangeUse the new workspace customization features in CA ERwin Data Modeler r8 to create a workflow suited to your own individual needsLeverage the new Bulk Editing features in CA ERwin Data Modeler r8 for mass metadata updates, as well as import/export with Microsoft ExcelCompare and merge model changes using CA ERwin Data Modelers Complete Compare featuresOptimize the organization and layout of your data models through the use of Subject Areas, Diagrams, Display Themes, and moreSection I provides an overview of data modeling: what it is, and why it is needed. The basic features of CA ERwin Data Modeler are introduced with a simple, easy-to-follow example.

Section II introduces the basic building blocks of a data model, including entities, relationships, keys, and more. How-to examples using CA ERwin Data Modeler are provided for each of these building blocks, as well as 'real world' scenarios for context.

Section III covers the creation of reusable standards, and their importance in the organization. From standard data modeling constructs such as domains to CA ERwin-specific features such as UDPs, this section covers step-by-step examples of how to create these standards in CA ERwin Data Modeling, from creation, to template building, to sharing standards with end users through reporting and queries.

Section IV discusses conceptual, logical, and physical data models, and provides a comprehensive case study using CA ERwin Data Modeler to show the interrelationships between these models using CA ERwin's Design Layer Architecture. Real world examples are provided from requirements gathering, to working with business sponsors, to the hands-on nitty-gritty details of building conceptual, logical, and physical data models with CA ERwin Data Modeler r8.

From the Foreword by Tom Bilcze, President, CA Technologies Modeling Global User Community:

Data Modeling Made Simple with CA ERwin Data Modeler r8 is an excellent resource for the ERwin community. Through the liberal use of illustrations, the inexperienced data modeler is graphically walked through the components of data models and how to create them in CA ERwin r8. As an experienced data modeler, Steve and Donna give me a handbook for effectively using the new and enhanced features of r8 to bring my art form to life.

This book by Steve Hoberman and Donna Burbank is both excellent and essential for the ERwin r8 user. The excellence is a probable result of the wonderful skills and depth of knowledge of the authors. But the book is also essential for users of ERwin r8, simply because it provides detailed and easy to follow coverage of the many advanced features of this completely modernized data modeling tool.

Full disclosure requires me to report that I have the privilege of knowing Steve Hoberman personally. I met him this past March when I invited him to present his terrific Master Data Modeling class in our South Texas facility. The class was great, and my colleagues are still talking about it. Steve is an outstanding and entertaining instructor. But he is also much more: perhaps the most gifted active author relative to data modeling principles and practices, an obviously successful entrepenuer, and a very nice guy. His teaming with Donna Burbank on this important book is a match made in data modeling Heaven.

Many of us have used ERwin as a data modeling tool for many years. But Erwin r8 represents one of the most radical upgrades of a software package I have experienced in thirty years in the data processing business. It may have been the marketing pressures from competing data modeling products that impelled Computer Associates to invest so much in this upgraded version. In any case, ERwin r8 is a vastly different product, with a great deal more functionality as compared to earlier versions. In the past, most folks probably learned earlier versions of ERwin intuitively and without formal training. This book absolutely fills in the gap for experienced users of previous versions of ERwin. But it is also an excellent text for users of other products or even for those entirely new to the discipline of data modeling. DBA's will likewise be well edified by the many practical examples even of physical data modeling, forward, and reverse engineering contained within the text.

Of the very many innovative aspects of this newly enriched product, I was perhaps most thrilled with the treatment of domains. To put this in context, I am a totally committed advocate of Dr. Codd's relational model for database. In fact, I am even now rereading Dr. Codd's magisterial "The Relational Model for Database Management: Version 2. Just this morning, I read over Chapter three, which details the centricity of domains in the relational model. Codd even holds that domains are "the glue that holds the relational model together". In this context, the outstanding treatment of domains in ERwin r8 by Hoberman and Burbank is, in itself, worth the price of the entire book.

Fellow colleagues, don't complain that ERwin r8 has such an entirely new "look and feel" from previous versions. Rather, pick up this excellent and important book; and emerge as the thought leaders and technical experts within your organizations. Get to know this exciting and terrifically enhanced product with Hoberman and Burbank as your guides. God bless.

great for those just learning ERwin 8 - 8.02. There is an update to the book so look for that one which has a few updates.
  • Tebei
Even though I have never used ERWIN before, I was able to read it and within two days, I can easily build models (physical and logical). Screenshots definitely help. Some of the concepts like normalization (1NF, 2NF etc), cardinality are explained beautifully.

Everything you could want to know about Erwin Data Model r8. The book can also be used to learn earlier versions of Erwin as well without much difficulty because each section can be easily matched up to the various functions Erwin Data Modeler can perform. A must for any modeler that will be using Erwin Data Modeler.
