I recently took and passed my CCNA, with little help from this book. Had I only studied this book, I do not think I would have passed. After reading and studying this book for a month, I was given a Cisco Press book, and I found I didn't know half of what I needed to. There are MANY things missing from this book, and they are constantly contradicting themselves. Very poor quality book.

For the record, I did pass both of the A+ exams, using just this book, but looking back, this book did have a couple glaring problems that costed 1 star each. If you are taking the hardware exam, this book is actually quite useful, but for the OS exam, you must take it with a grain of salt.
The first problem with this book were the test questions. The types of questions asked by the A+ exam were quite different than the ones asked at the end of each chapter in this book, so while the questions can help you remember important information, don't expect the test to be like what you see in the book.
The second, and more glaring problem was the fact that the OS exam chapters were much lighter in content than the chapters devoted to the hardware exam. TO give you an idea, the hardware exam has 7 chapters in this book, but the OS exam has 4 chapters. After studying for both exams vigorously, I passed the hardware exam with flying colors, but I failed teh OS exam. There were questions on the exam dealing with content that was totally absent from the book (NT stuff, some troubleshooting stuff, and some networking stuff). I had to study for the exam even harder using this book, and even then I barely passed for the same reason: some stuff just wasn't covered in this book.
To the credit of the authors though, the hardware exam portion of this book is excellent. They cover quite a bit of useful content, and the CD that comes with the book really helps with this exam too. I think this book can be used as a good reference for PC hardware and troubleshooting even if you finished the A+ exam.
In summary, the book was lop-sided in coverage and the test questions could be formatted differently, but as far as the hardware exam goes, this book was great. For the OS exam, try looking at other resources.

I used this book and the companion answer book - A+ Certification Test Yourself Practice Exam as my primary study guides (also used the A+ for Dummies book). This book is well organized, however there are many errors. Also the test format is different from the actual test. All of the test questions in this book could have multiple answers, but on the actual test I got only a couple of multiple answer questions. I agree with some of the other reviews when they recommend waiting for the 2nd edition. I have 15+ years of experience on PC's so all I was looking for was a book that highlights the test material. Although I passed both tests, 92/90 I recommend you look at the other study guides. Recommend A+ for Dummies.

After reading this book, I am NOT CONFIDENT in taking the A+ exam. Not only is the book full of glaring errors and poorly worded questions, half the "practice tests" on the CD only work with Internet Explorer 4, most of the remaining I couldn't get to run, and the ones I could were pretty much worthless. I get the feeling this book was rushed to print by authors who don't really have a grasp of the subject matter. Despite its flashy cover and outlandish praise, my advice is to try a different book, and hope it's better than this one.

While this book is organized according to the A+ exam objectives, it's apparent the author didn't do enough research or have the time to include the relevant knowledge tested on the exam. 50% of what you need to know is covered for the Core Exam. The Windows/DOS exam section is almost useless. My advice is to find another study guide or use the web. I passed both exams scoring in the 90's, but no thanks to this study guide.

Unlike most A+ Certification texts, this is a two-part set consisting of a study guide and exam text. Probably the most gratifying feature are the many large full-color photos which I feel most people can easily relate to and find easier to understand than hand-drawn pictures. It even comes with a CD-ROM. Thankfully, the study text is quite short at just over 500 pages. This text is probably one of the most novice-friendly.

Of the 2 other books i bought to study for the exam this was the one that i relied on. the "real life tips" were an additional bonus, because they have been a good reference in my work. the cd was a usfklul aid innavigating through this very thick book, and the self test areas were helpful in pointing out my weak areas. Good part on Operating Systems.

Book is layed out VERY well.. has easy to read, flows nice, cool exam notes.. helped me and a friend pass with only 3 days studying (not to mention over 3 years exp but still).. covers more then you need, but its better to know more then less. i wouldn't use it as an ONLY resource.. enjoy! -Joe M.
I have been through more than 7 of this series and this A+ book keeps up with the positive reputation of Syngress. Very well written, to the point and comprehensive. Used it to pass my A+ exam with a 96. Even if your not heading for the A+ exam, this one will give you a good understanding of computer hardware and troubleshooting.
