Doug Flutie is an amazing quarterback and human being. Great book!

Only thing wrong with this bio is that it only goes until Flutie is with the Buffalo Bills. Other than that, it's great.

Doug Flutie was the best player in CFL

history and a Pro Football legend who

taught the overrated NFL a thing or

two about the 'size' NON-issue. If

this guy had ever had a REAL good Coach

(how about if he'd gone to New England

under Bill Belichick before Thomas Brady!)

who would have trusted him, man, I beleive

he could have won that elusive Super Bowl.

The drop kick may end up being the Coda

on a fine career. Instant Canadian Foot-

ball Hall of Fame and Museum selection

as soon as he's done (and maybe a broad-

caster this year, eh?). What a career.

He always rose above the stupidity of

sorry Coaches like Wade Phillips!-R.A.S

The way Flutie copes with the poverty & turmoil of herfamily is in ever-increasing silence. She is not only afraid to speak, she is afraid of being. As I read I wondered if I was supposed to like this book, this heroine, this mute misery. I often had to re-read sections to make sense of it & sometimes that sense was horrible. Partly because of Flutie's inarticulateness, partly because of her raw-boned neediness, partly because of her hidden voice. This is a devastating coming-of-age of one very lost girl stumbling toward womanhood. Worth the effort!...

In this book there is a great deal of interest towards his career in the Canadian Football League which is fine as that is the league that he predominantly played in but there appears to be little coverage of his peronal life i.e. going into more depth about his childhood, his parents and later his wife and family. There are instances where he tells us how much he enjoys spending time with his family back in Boston but they don't follow up on this. I do like the quotes from all of his coaches and agents etc. They are on occasions funny and nearly always allow a follow up to what Doug felt about certain circumstances. Overall the book was easy enough to read, but, in my opinion was maybe of more interest to a follow of the CFL as to American Football in general.

The protagonist, thirteen-year-old Flutie, lives in the boonies in Western Oklahoma far from most good-sized towns.

Glancy focuses her book on the life of this strange girl who lives in a dusty small town. The setting is current time. Flutie grows from age 13 to 20 in these pages. Her disfunctional family, her father's job repairing old cars and tractors, her mother's indifference are all Flutie knows of life. She wishes they would tell her the stories of her father's Cherokee people and her mother's German ancestors. She has a brother, Franklin, but he won't talk to her either. He doesn't want to be botterez.

But Flutie can't carry on a conversation with anyone. Her voice freezes up when she tries to speak in class or to anyone she doesn't know well. She says it doesn't matter that her mother and father, neighbors old Luther and old Ruther -- they wouldn't listen even if she did try to talk to them.

Flutie futilely looks for a job after high school and finding none, she decides to go to college. There she begins studying geology: the rocks and their spirits, these bring her joy.

Flutie reads the myth of Philomela, whose tongue was cut out by her sister's husband so Philomela cannot tell anyone that her brother-in-law raped her. Flutie feels as if she has had her tongue cut out as well.

Finally the old neighbor Ruther helps Flutie find her way.......

I found this a very different kind of book. Most of it didn't make sense to me, but I know that Glancy is a much respected author and I hear the book is being made into a movie. I have long been fascinated with the Saint, Kateri Tekakwitha, which is pictured on the cover. A family friend named her first daughter that, and told me it meant all things in order, all things as they come. The book did not explain the connection to the cover painting of the "Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha." The book is a quick read, only about a hundred pages.
