This is a collection of monographs on influential personalities in 20th Century Vietnam. They cover a range of topics such as land and labor reform, women's issues, politics, rural development and the like. The writers include both French and Vietnamese scholars. It is not a book about the war, but rather about Vietnam's social and political issues and the personalities who shaped them. My immediate interest is in Dr. Henriette Bui Quang Chieu, Vietnam's first western-trained physician, with whom I worked during the war. An elegant article by historian Tran Thi Lien details Dr. Bui's struggles to become a physician, to overcome the prejudice of her French colleagues, and to practice medicine during the tumultuous decades of the war. Dr. Bui was an extraordinary figure whose story needed to be told. Lien interviewed her in Paris during the 1990's.
