Wading River, Long Island. Men were writing books describing that world. They trusted the picture in their heads. Behold! human beings living in a sort of underground den, which has a mouth open. And then over four years later, on a Thursday morning, came the news of an armistice, and people gave vent to their unutterable relief that the slaughter was over.

Lippmann was a journalist, a media critic and a philosopher who tried to reconcile the tensions between liberty and democracy in a complex and modern world, as in his 1920 book "Liberty and the News". During World War I, Lippmann became an adviser to President Woodrow Wilson and assisted in the drafting of Wilson's "Fourteen Points".

This is not a comment on the work but on the actual printed version itself. The typeface was so unbelievably tiny that it I couldn't comfortably read it, and I'm not an old person with bifocals. Each page has lots of whitespace; the text is just printed in a weird, small rectangle on the middle of each page. This is not an actual book. Unreadable.

Great book about american views on public consent. A must read for anyone in social science fields. Written very simply

The book is a modern reprint of a once-famous book by an amazingly influential public figure, Walter Lippmann. However, the back cover of the paperback copy sent to me describes an entirely different book, an anthology of classic literature. Is that why it was for sale so cheap?

Lippman was the first one to state what public opinion was, and why it mattered. He did this in the years between World Wars 1 and 2. This book became important because it offered individuals a view into the power that one could gain by manipulating public opinion. It would only be until after the end of WW2 that we would see how correct Lippman was. HIs view has been added to, and modified over the years, so that today this work seems out of touch and simplistic. However, we must not loose sight of who gave shape to the field and why it matters to understand the topic. We should not loose sight of that contribution.
