He had even read one of the books-Pride and Prejudice-although he had thought many of the heroine's problems would have been solved if someone had simply strangled her mother. Forcing himself to attend to the matter at hand, Thierry turned to the guard and placed a hand on his neck. Brackman ran up to the driver's side, reached around the edge of the windshield, and slammed the paintball against the glass.

Private Demon: A Novel of the Darkyn. This is my first book by Lynn Viehl. I enjoyed this book but now I need to go back and read the first book to see if I can fill in the gaps. This seems to be about vampires and how they are cursed. The vampires in this book/series are not able to turn humans to vampires. It seems that the human die before the mutation is completed. sunnysd 1Go to sunnysd 1's profile, opens in a new window. Driven to the edge of sanity by the Brethren's torture and his wife's betrayal, Thierry Durand has dropped off the face of the Darkyn map.

I read book 1 (If Angels Burn) then book 3 (Dark Need) before I read this one; book 2. So I have to admit that it took a while for me to get in to this one; especially after reading about Sam and Lucan's explosive romance in book 3.

Even though Jema is wealthy, intellegent, and caring she is not loved. Her father died when she was baby during an archeological dig over seas; all that she has in her life is her mother and the family doctor who lives with them. Jema's mother is a horrible, bitter, control freak and with the help of the family doctor basically prevented Jema from having much of a social life outside of home and work. Jema was diagnosed with childhood diabetes and her mother and doctor are able to control her by using guilt and fear of her illness and poor health condition; Jema is not expected to live past her 30th birthday.
Jema's next door neighbor is Valentin Jaus; he is one of the darkyn and suzerain of the Chicago jardin. He is secretely infatuated with Jema and sends flowers to her every year on her birthday.

Thierry (from book 1) arrives in Chicago with the intention of finding the men responsible for torturing Luisa; one of Alex's (the doctor whom repaired Thierry's body in book 1) patients. Instead of finding the bad guys he finds Jema; and since Jema and Luisa worked together at Jema's father's museum and are friends, Thierry believes that he can use his talent (all of the darkyn have different talents/powers) to gain information about the attack. Thierry's talent is the ability to enter people's dreams. Thierry takes shelter in a different house neighboring Jema's; at night he secretly climbs in to her bedroom window and then enters her dreams.

Alex and Michael are also in Chicago, tracking down Thierry; they are actually lodging at Jaus' home.

Jon (Alex's brother and ex-priest) finds work at a youth shelter filled with troubled, homeless, youth outcasts. Jon is still struggling with his faith and with the deception and tourtue that he endured when he was recruited by the brethern (evil crazy monks and main bad guys of the series) in book one.

I enjoyed reading this one; just like the other two and I know that I am a fan of this series. Other reviewers were not happy with the way that this one ended but I think that if it had ended differently (if the other guy was chosen instead) then that would not have made any sense considering the direction that the story took.

My heart was breaking at the end of this one but it was bitter sweet because Jema was finally happy. I can't wait to read book #6 Twilight Fall because in this one a seriously broken heart will be mended.

What i really liked about this book is it is tied in with the first book and all the characters. In the first book Theirry suffers the ultimate betrayal by his wife. Turning in her husband and her own son to the Brethren, a group of evil priests bent on distructing the Kyn. Theirry's son Jamys had his tounge cut out by the brethren, so he has problems relaying his words. Theirry goes to Chicago to avenge a woman who was nearly killed by the Brethren. Theirry is a great defendor of women. Theirry meets Jema Shaw, a friend of the abused woman. Theirry has an instant pull to Jema and same for her. Theirry's Kyn talent is dream walking. He justify's that he needs to find out information by dream walking in Jema's dream. Theirry and Jema have this healing effect on eachother by sharing their lives with one another through dreams. Jema's next door neighbor is Valantine Jaus. Jaus has watched Jema since she was a baby and loves her. There is inner conflicts with the Kyn along with Alexandria's brother John. Alexandria is the mate of Michael Cyprien, the leader of the kyn in america. There is threat from an old enemy, an assasign and a local skinhead gang. with everyone looking for Theirry, including Jamys who is searching for his father, this book is not boring or slow. Viehl has a talent of weaving multiple story lines into one increadible story. Theirry and Jema save eachother, a true love helping eachother be the best they can, who can dislike that??

PRIVATE DEMON is the second installment of the Darkyn series after IF ANGELS BURN. Lynn Viehl brings back the characters - Alexandra Keller and Michael Cyprien - as they play an equally important role to capture Thierry Durand, this book's hero.

Thierry centers in on Jema Shaw at a homicide crime scene, believing she can lead him to members of the Brethren, an evil group of monks set on destroying the Darkyn. He enters her dreams in order to discover information, but loses his heart instead.

One thing the book lacks is hot steamy romance scenes. Instead, the reader gets dark snippets inside Thierry mind which explains his past. Also through Jema's dreams a bond is formed with Thierry that goes beyond physical.

One thing that should be highlighted about this book is Viehl's ability to add subplots without disturbing the story. In J.R. Ward's book, DARK LOVER, the extra characters distracted, where as Viehl blends the characters together to perfection.

Staying true to the dark motif, there be no fairy tale, everyone walks away happily ever after ending. I don't want to say more as it might ruin it for the reader. You'll have to judge whether or not you like it or not. I admire the author for not taking the safe road and veering into new territory.

The only problem I had with the story was the same as with the first and that's believability. I just didn't buy the story hook, line, and sinker. Even so, it's one of the best dark fantasy series out on the market. I would suggest you start with the very first book, IF ANGELS BURN.
