The book is intensive, not a casual read. i am finding it hard to learn, but any book would make this hard. One person found this helpful.

Colloquial Punjab; deals with all the four traditionally. Probably the best book to learn Panabi printed in the West. Complete Panjabi isn't bad, but this is better.
It uses the international phonetic alphabet which doesn't really help with the pronunciation. You will need the tapes, the distinctions between the sounds-letters are often missed by non-South Asians.
Also go to youtube and look for videos on Panjabi Pronunciation a video by Canadian student Stephen Guccione [sic] will help marvelously. After you get out of the pronunciation gate the language become easier. Gurmukhi script is the easiest Indian script to learn.

The book is intensive, not a casual read. it teaches you the written language as well as the oral. i am finding it hard to learn, but any book would make this hard. they use totally new characters in there language that i am trying to learn. the book is good

Unfortunately, Punjabi is lacking in instructional resources and what it does have is not the best. I come from a Punjabi speaking family, and this book does an OK job as an introduction, however I did not like the English script transliterations provided because it was harder to follow (following Gurmukhi is easier). I wish the author had included more vocabulary for more advanced students and also said more on the Shahmukhi script (used in Pakistan). The Teach Yourself Panjabi is a good source because it provides Punjabi in Gurumukhi as well as in the English Script and also has a good dictionary. If you are a serious learner of Punjabi, it is good to get idea to explore some of the more colloquial speech (not as a beginner though...way to confusing), so try Cummings "Panjabi Guide." It is hard to find though...try Interlibrary loan.
