The Oxford Handbook of J. .has been added to your Cart. This book is an excellent resource for understanding many of the practical, everyday details concerning life in Palestine during the period of Roman domination. It covers a variety of subjects including sociology, domestic architecture, clothing, food, commerce, and leisure-time activities, among many other topics. I happen to be in the process of writing a historical novel for which the information contained in this book is particularly relevant, and I have found this book to be an especially useful reference.

This book is a highly original exploration of how a sense of being 'a Christian', or of 'Christian identity', was shaped within the setting of the Jewish and Graeco-Roman world. The Oxford Handbook of Greek and Roman Coinage will fill this gap by providing a systematic overview of the major coinages of the classical world.

On Jewish education in the Graeco-Roman context, with extensive bibliography, see Hezser (2001Hezser (, 2010 and Hirshman (2009); the latter (121-126) includes a useful brief survey of secondary literature on education and literacy in rabbinic literature. Scholars usually understand parables as stories about the everyday life in Roman- Palestine. The parables' perceived realistic setting served as an invitation to the listeners to engage with the story. However, despite the emphasis on realism, slavery in the parables has been neglected among scholars.

The Oxford Handbook of Jewish Daily Life in Roman Palestine. Oxford University Press. Catherine J. Doughty, Mike Long.

Written by an international and interdisciplinary team of distinguished scholars, The Oxford Handbook of Jewish Daily Life in Roman Palestine is an indispensable reference compendium on the day-to-day lives of Jews in the land of Israel in Roman times. Ranging from subjects such as clothing and domestic architecture to food and meals, labour and trade, and leisure time activities, the volume covers all the major themes in an encompassing yet easily accessible way. Individual chapters introduce the reader to the current state of research on particular aspects of ancient Jewish everyday life - research which has been greatly enriched by critical methodological approaches to rabbinic texts, and by the growing interest of archaeologists in investigating the lives of ordinary people. Detailed bibliographies inspire further engagement by enabling readers to pursue their own lines of enquiry. The Handbook will prove to be an invaluable reference work and tool for all students and scholars of ancient Judaism, rabbinic literature, Roman provincial history and culture, and of ancient Christianity.

This book is an excellent resource for understanding many of the practical, everyday details concerning life in Palestine during the period of Roman domination. I happen to be in the process of writing a historical novel for which the information contained in this book is particularly relevant, and I have found this book to be an especially useful reference. I recommend it to anyone who is interested in learning more about what scholars from several academic disciplines think ordinarily Jewish life may have been like back during those Roman provincial days.

Good entries and extensive bibliographical info at the end of each chapter. Up to the minute perspectives on Jewish daily life in Roman Palestine (that don't necessarily jibe with the stuff we were taught in the past!).
The book is very expensive, but probably worth the money because it is so comprehensive.
