"This book is an introduction to some of the main problems of philosophy--God, mind, freedom, knowledge, and ethics. The chapters may be read independently of one another. But when read in order, they tell a more or less continuous story. We begin with some reflections about the legacy of Socrates and then go on to the existence of God, which is perhaps the most basic philosophical question of all because our answer to it influences how we will answer all the others. This leads naturally to a discussion of death and the soul, and then to more modern ideas about the nature of persons. The later chapters are about whether it is possible for us to have objective knowledge in either science or ethics." James Rachels, from the Preface

Problems from Philosophy and The Truth About the World: Basic Readings in Philosophy are at once James Rachels' newest contributions to philosophy and his last. In these two books, Rachels found a culminating expression for his love of philosophy.

I bought this as a companion book for The Truth about the World: Basic Readings In Philosophy (Second Edition). A book also by Rachels & Rachels. Problems from Philosophy is written in plain and simple language and discusses the theories presented in the other book. Both books were assigned texts for an introduction to Philosophy class. I found this book to be invaluable as a companion book. I'm passing it down to my teenagers who are freshmen in college.

At Cerritos College, Norwalk, California, Philosophy 100 class, Dr. Stolze is teaching based on this book for the first part of the semester. he uses two books and one of em is this book. It's good good contents and a lot of good examples to easily explain theories and examples.
  • Gajurus
Bought this for a friend. He loved it.
  • Kage
I found this book to be enjoyable based on the chapters I had to read for class. The kindle version was about 95% cheaper than what the paperback cost from my bookstore. Only downside was that the amazon listing seems to be quite confusing / it mixes this book with another from Russel.

the book was a little beat up, but served its purpose as all of the pages were there. No advice on how to return rental.
  • Venemarr
This was a required book for a class I took. I enjoyed this book. Many of our questions on exams came straight from it and I found it to be useful.
Arrived in good condition.
