How one can write a book of 1000+ pages and remain on a fairly basic level of understanding is beyond belief. In addition, the book lacks any kind of practical bent. And on top of it, the authors lack passion for the subject matter. A few examples will suffice:
- A couple of pages describing how US and international accounting rules define the cash flow statement. Good. Then we get absolutely no comment on how important these differences are in a practical setting. The reader is just left to himself with the information.
- A couple of pages on accounting for goodwill. Again absolutely nothing about how important it is. In reality goodwill accounting can massively distort ratios, but the book is rather silent on the topic. I cannot understand how you can write a book about analysis of financial statements without dealing with this issue in great detail.
- A couple of pages on pension liabilities, nothing about capitalisation of R&D, etc.
- A couple of pages on mergers and acquisitions.

The authors present material that is relevant for passing an CFA exam, but I expected more (and I assumed the hurdle to pass the exam was higher). Furthermore, I expected the authors to take some responsibility for advising the reader about good practice in analysing companies. (In contrast, I have read some of the co-author Richardson's academic papers and they are well written and interesting.) In a book with 1000+ pages it would have been so easy to at least add ten pages on each of the topics listed above.

It would also have been immensely useful to describe common accounting tricks to watch out for. The book is silent on how to use advanced analysis of corporate accounts to understand the health of the company. There are books specialising in this like Creative Cash Flow Reporting: Uncovering Sustainable Financial Performance and Financial Shenanigans: How to Detect Accounting Gimmicks & Fraud in Financial Reports, Third Edition, but a concise textbook treatment would have been greatly appreciated. After all, the point of an analysis of financial statements is to find problems early.

The international aspects of the book are mostly in the book's title (and dare I say mostly to sell additional copies). We get some comparison with the international accounting rules, but we get no information beyond some basics. Surely the international accounting rules are not the same in France, India, and Japan.

Another book that actually advises the reader about best practice is Valuation: Measuring and Managing the Value of Companies, 5th Edition (Wiley Finance). The treatment of goodwill in that book is much better, but not so for the other examples mentioned above. However, what I like with that book is that its authors at least tries to take responsibility for providing advice. They also show some passion for the subject matter.

Another book that bridges the accounting and finance perspectives is Penman's Financial Statement Analysis and Security Valuation. That is also a textbook, but with 700 pages it has less fluff. The focus is on US GAAP and the book is also weak on the more advanced topics. However, the author is passionate about the subject and being closer to practice, he actually gives useful advice.

If you want to pass an exam, you should buy the book. If you just want a very basic MBA level understanding of financial statement analysis, I suppose the book is okay too (but probably 300 pages too long). If you actually intend to do some financial statement analysis that can be used in real life, do not expect much from this book. The CFA Institute ought to be ashamed as well as provide an explanation as a comment to this review.

The only reason the book gets two (instead of one) star, is that there is a lot of less important information in the book.

Well written and easy to understand. The workbook that comes with it is really helpful too, especially because it includes answers to the questions and gives you more practice.
