Retief at Large (Jaime Retief Series Keith Laumer. Retief in the Ruins (Jaime Retief Series. Eric Flint is a posthumous omnibus of Keith Laumer's early Retief stories. It consists of the very first Retief novella from Fantastic, "Diplomat- at- Arms," which is presented as a portrait of Retief late in his career. It doesn't really fit comfortably with the rest of the tales. The remainder of the tales are all of the short stories from Envoy to New Worlds (1963) and Galactic Diplomat (1965) and the complete first Retief novel, Retief's War (1966)- though the story sequence is slightly different from their original chronology.

Jame Retief is the main character in a series of satirical science fiction stories by Keith Laumer. The stories were written over a span of thirty years beginning in the early 1960s, without much regard for chronology or any particular scheme. Detailing the travails of Jame Retief in the Corps Diplomatique Terrestrienne (CDT), the stories have a base in Laumer's experiences in the United States Foreign Service, notably his time as vice consul in Burma in the 1950s.

Retief at Large book. Keith Laumer (aka . Laumer, J. Keith Laumer) is best known for his Bolo stories and his satirical Retief series. Cosmic diplomacy and Machiavellian intrigue  .

I needed this collection to share "Grime and Punishment" as an introduction to ecology and food webs with my older students. That story is perfect for that. I have read other reviews which 'pan' the Retief series as shallow and lacking in a message. Not so, I think. True, the characterisation may appear facile with 'stock' characters, but this series is one of the best 'hit below the belt' satires on politics and the diplomatic corps worldwide at the time of Keith Laumer's writing and it fits so well today. Smiling diplomats and main chance politicans are still with us, prattling platitudes and thinking the opposite. Laumer's take on the Vietnam War and the politics of Burma (he was a diplomat there post WW II) when Burma was given by the British to a lowland regional tribe, who hate anyone from anywhere else in Burma (Oops, Myannmar) and I think the injustice of this rankled with him. He was right about it serving up a lot of hurt up to the present day. Read the series and don't worry, just enjoy and laugh.

I have always enjoyed Laumer's Retief series. Always entertaining. This particular volume contains a number of short stories that I didn't have in my collection.
