Michel Butor was a French writer. His work includes novels; literary criticism, collected in the Repertoire (Inventory) series; poetry (the four volumes of the Illustrations series, 1964-1976); and texts that defy classification, such as Mobile: étude pour une representation des États Unis (1962; Mobile: A Study For the Representation of the United States). Butor continues to explore new terrain in works such as Où: Génie du lieu 2 (1971; Where or When: Genius of the Place 2) and Boomerang: Génie du lieu 3 (1978).
