Like them, it is handsomely illustrated: even a casual student of the nineteenth century may enjoy the plates from James's boyhood books, including Doré's illustrations of Perrault's Contes and the sketches from Frank Leslie's New York Journal.

Kipling wrote equally well for children and adults. His best-known children's books are Just So Stories (1902), The Jungle Books (1894-95), and Kim (1901).
