Having never read any Joyce Carol Oates, I'm not sure if this was the best book to start with. Once again, I wonder about Joyce Carol Oates.

Having never read any Joyce Carol Oates, I'm not sure if this was the best book to start with. It's composed of short stories that are all intertwined in some way - until they're not. That's the issue with this book of short stories. The characters that seem to preoccupy her in the novels and short stories I've read are unhappy characters in one way or another, and their lives perpetuate that unhappiness.
