About The Spirit of Radio. The song is dedicated to CFNY, which at the time was a Toronto radio station that played alternative music – the kind of stuff that wasn’t being heard on the pop stations or the hard rock stations. Ironically, Rush was probably not being played on CFNY very often in the late 1970s and early 1980s; they would have been seen as too tied to the 70s hard-rock sound that would (in Toronto) have been heard on stations like Q107. The opening riff is somewhat comparable to that of Dream Police by Cheap Trick. The Spirit of Radio" Track Info

The Spirit of Radio" is a song released in 1980 by the Canadian rock band Rush from their album Permanent Waves. The song's name was inspired by Toronto radio station CFNY-FM's slogan. It was significant in the growing popularity of the band. The beginning of the song was composed in the key of E mixolydian, and most of the rest of the song in E major. The Spirit of Radio" features the band experimenting with a reggae style in its closing section.
