Procession of the Dead. Young Adult Novels by Darren Shan. If The Cardinal pinched the cheeks of his arse, the walls of the city bruised. They were that close, Siamese twins, joined by a wretched, twisted soul. He dominated my thoughts as the train chewed through the suburbs, wormed past the warehouses and factories, then slowly braved the shadows of a graveyard of skyscrapers.

Estimates of the numbers lost to the hordes of the walking dead vary wildly, but most reporters agree that it’s probably somewhere between four and five billion. I have to repeat that slowly to myself the first time I hear it, and even then I can’t really comprehend it. Four or five billion, most of the world’s population, slaughtered or reduced to the status of reanimated corpses. Then, on the morning of the rescue, they declare a meeting point and fly in at an appointed time, usually the middle of the day when the sun is at its strongest.

New York Times bestselling YA author Darren Shan makes his adult fiction debut with this first book in a new series set in a darkly imagined world called the City.PROCESSION OF THE DEADWhat had I done before coming to the city? I couldn't remember. It sounded crazy but my past was a blank. I could recall every step since alighting from the train, but not a single one before. Young, quick-witted and cocksure, Capac Raimi arrives in the City determined to make his mark in a world of sweet, sinister sin. He finds the City is a place of exotic dangers: a legendary assassin with snakes tattooed on his face who moves like smoke, blind Incan priests that no one seems to see, a kingpin who plays with puppets, and friends who mysteriously disappear as though they never existed. Then Capac crosses paths with The Cardinal, and his life changes forever. The Cardinal is the City, and The City is The Cardinal. They are joined at the soul. Nothing moves on the streets, or below them, without the Cardinal's knowledge. His rule is absolute. When Capac discovers the extent of The Cardinal's influence on his own life, he is faced with hard choices and his own soaring ambition. To find his way, Capac must know himself and what he is capable of. But how can you trust yourself when you can't remember your past?

This story is a twisted and dark version of Pinocchio. When I say that I don't mean one will feel as though they are reading a Disney book. Far from it. This story I dark and very twisted.
I love Darren Shan's books. This one in particular will almost make you uncomfortable at the end. I LOVED IT! Shan can write stories that make you hate and love the main characters in one book, then make you hate yourself for liking them.
If you haven't read this book you should.
I suggest that ages 15 and younger not read this.
This was intended for adults. I know Darren Shan usually releases young adult books but this is a departure from that.
If you are young and want a crazy dark Darren Shan story? I suggest "The Thin Executioner." That is an awesome story and a bit more suitable for that age group.

Saw this on the shelf at Walmart and it looked cool enough. Turns out that it is hands down one of my ABSOLUTE favorite series! It's very imaginative and I cannot believe the majority of people I talk to haven't heard of this author aside from Cirque Du Freak. Definitely geared to the older crowd or someone of high school age. Read it! You will not be disappointed!

Dude honestly loved it. Basically mafia meets paranormal, and while that might not seem like something that should be mixed, its done very very well. It takes mafia to another level. Story has great characters. you should all probably know my 2 favorite types of things are paranormal and mafias, so thats probably why this was so awesome for me to read.

Awesome read. A little slow at first but the twists and turns keep you interested and the detail is impeccable.

I read this book with no expectations. I saw an ad for it on a website I frequent, and honestly, thought the cover and title were interesting, so on a whim, I bought the book and began it without attempting to learn anything about it beforehand. After only a few minutes reading, the book drew me in and kept hold of me for a few days. It was very interesting, and I would recommend it to those who enjoy grittier novels. I am intentionally leaving out any reference to the plot or genre, as I thoroughly enjoyed my experience going into the book completely blind, and would like to let you read it for yourself.

It was ok, really hard to get into at first, but I love reading Mr. Shan's work so I pushed through. It did get better in the end. I'm considering reading the rest of the series soon
This book is quite a bit more "mature" (meaning explicit sex) than Darren Shan's other books. May wanna' save this one for mom/dad.
