Like most fans of the series, I especially enjoyed the main character, Victoria Iphegenia

Like most fans of the series, I especially enjoyed the main character, Victoria Iphegenia. She was grouchy, unfeminine, smart, loyal, and sometimes rather foolhardy. There was also lots of action, and lots of Chicago detail to enjoy along the way. I thought Sara Paretsky did a great job balancing plot movement, and scene and character development, to keep the reader hooked and engaged. I took a break from the books, but decided to come back for this one. Boy, was I ever disappointed!

In Total Recall, Sara Paretsky brings together several disparate plots in one gripping story. This powerfully suspenseful novel confronts the machinations of a vast and corrupt industry that trades on the victims of Nazi terrorism; the strange and dubious phenomenon of "recovered memory;" and a personal story that brings V. I. Warshawski into the long-buried past of her dearest friend and mentor, Dr. Lotty Herschel. Lotty was a child of nine when she came to England in 1939 as a refugee from Austria. Having lost her entire family to the Nazi terror, she grew up and completed her medical training in London - and there fell in love with a fellow refugee. She ended the affair when she discovered she was pregnant and bore the child in secrecy, giving it up for adoption. Now, that long-held secret may be exposed. At a national conference in Chicago on Jews in Modern America, a man with recovered memories makes a dramatic appearance and claim - and his name brings consternation to Lotty. V.I. is retained to find out whether or not he is a surviving relative of Lotty's. It's a search that meshes stunningly with the pursuit of another case she is on - for what she uncovers, to her great peril, is brutal insurance fraud on an international scale. Total Recall is Paretsky's most spectacular achievement to date, and takes V.I. to new heights of gusto, guts, passion for justice - and risk.

Am addicted to the V.I. Warshawski series and will read all 18 books. Sara Paretsky is a fabulous writer. At times she refers to an event from an earlier story. When she does this she gives a short explanation but not to the point that you feel you would have to read the story pertaining to the situation. Your interest is only peaked. I enjoy reading about Warshawski's adventures. Am quite amazed at the imagination of Sara Paretsky as in each book she picks completely different subject material for the plot. Love a mystery and have enjoyed all Sara's books. If you enjoy a mystery, read them in sequence and you won't be sorry.

She never fails to give you a good read - I read some of her earlier works and then she fell off my radar when she was on a hiatus of sorts until I came across some of her books on a clearance table at a local bookstore - I bought one to catch up with her and was not disappointed, I then caught up the rest of the series with her Kindle editions. The only CON to her books is the higher than normal Kindle price - I wanted to finish the series and was glad I did BUT I feel she needs to get in line with her Kindle edition prices

Some have complained about her liberal views coming through the book - they are part of the character - I for one am glad to read something other than cookie cutter detective stories

I am a Paretsky fan, so saying I love one of her book is not unusual. I've read may 10 or more of them. Saying it is possibly at the top of that list so far, that's says it's the best of her best. I was not sure when she started why she chose the very different format for this book. But she nailed it. Excellent execution of a tricky format. It's also great to get in at the street level of people's lives. We now know so much more about specific characters that are a critical part of V.I.'s life and support system. I'm reading her books in no order, but I can't wait to have time to read another.

There are too many characters to keep track of. The main character is so disorganized that it drove me crazy and it is much too long.

Let me start by saying I LOVE the VI Warshawski series! This is the 11th in the series and I'm reading them all in order. I've really enjoyed the first ten but I am struggling to even finish this one! I sure hope the rest are better! Please don't make this be your first VI Warshawski or it will probably be your last!

No writer can compete with Sara Paretsky at her best, and she is at her best with Total Recall.

I am a big fan of V.I., but the background concerning her dear friend Lotty's post war years was a bit difficult to parse through, let alone hook up with the story-line of reparations, fraud, etc. Still a good read, just not my favorite of the series.
