John Byrom or John Byrom of Kersal or John Byrom of Manchester was an English poet, the inventor of a revolutionary system of shorthand and later a significant landowner. He is most remembered as the writer of the lyrics of Anglican hymn Christians awake! Salute the happy morn, which was supposedly a Christmas gift for his daughter. His diary gives interesting portraits and letters of the many great men of his time whom he knew intima tely. A collection of his poems was published in 1773, and he is included in Alexander Chalmers's English Poets.

The Life of John Byrom: A Study of Conflicting Loyalties. Byrom was also an active and secret Jacobite who conducted a wild affair with Queen Caroline.
