Written by nonsurgeons, Occupational Low Back Pain: Aggressive Nonsurgical Care outlines the necessary steps to be taken from the time a worker is injured to the time that individual returns to his job. This important book takes you through all facets of diagnosis such as the physical exam, imaging techniques and electrodiagnosis. This is an excellent book on the nonoperative care of occupational low back pain. It appears to be written mostly for the nonspecialist, but as a specialist, I find it informative and objective. Low back pain has many causes. Fortunately 85-90 percent of all patients with back pain will never need surgery for their problem. It is important to remember that surgery never cured isolated back pain and never will. The lower back has many pain sensitive structures that if injured can result in varying degrees of lower back pain. Non-surgical treatment is indicated for the majority of patients with lower back pain and/or sciatica because, most of the time, the pain will improve with conservative measures. The same is true for patients with herniated discs. One or two days of bedrest is a commonly prescribed treatment and can be effective for some lower back injuries.
