With tons of graphs and visual examples! Great for visual learners, like me (and like a lot of scientists!). Many important points are highlighted and in bold to make it easier for the reader to follow.

As a graduate student, I've suffered through more than my fair share of sub-par science presentations. Too many scientists believe that their science speaks for itself, but all too often it is totally lost on the audience because it is buried in poor communication and distracting design choices. Clearly, thoughtful creation of scientific presentations is not part of the curriculum for most scientists, but it should be, and this book could be the text.
Since I care about design and want to create the best presentations possible, I've read a few presentation how-to books, but those catered to scientists seem to be full of generic advice ("use contrasting colors!") and none so far have focused on visual design with graphics to show the reader examples. My favorite presentation book was "Slide:ology" by Nancy Duarte, which has great visuals, but the book is written for business and general presentations and does not cover the presentation issues that seem to plague scientists. "Designing Science Presentations" is actually much more thorough than "slide:ology", with more specifics and details (down to suggested point sizes for lines on graphs) and a more, well, scientific explanation of design principles such as color and typography. With tons of graphs and visual examples! Great for visual learners, like me (and like a lot of scientists!).

Pros:
* TONs of visual examples
* Easy to navigate to specific information (good index, logical sequence)
* Provides very specific details (point size, specific fonts to use, a list of ways to reduce wordiness)
* The design section is actually really helpful for creating figures for publication as well as for presentations.
* Not just about slide design! Includes advice on written presentations, poster design and presentation, oral presentations without slides, and different kinds common presentations (lab meetings, journal clubs, research seminar, symposium talk, etc.). Right now I'm finding the advice on writing research articles very hepful!
* Summary of 'Do's and 'Don't's for every chapter
* Nice coverage of "dealing with anxiety" and the Q&A section of talks

Cons:
* It is very thorough, so it takes quite a while to get through -- you can't just brush up before your big talk!
* The time expectations are a little overwhelming (at one point it's suggested that 5-20 hours be devoted to designing elegant tables, charts, etc. and then another 5-50 for designing slides, then another 1-5 to edit them for the particular talk). Unfortunately, no scientist I know has the 150 hours suggested as the maximum time to prepare a fully polished presentation. Perhaps this is meant to inspire scientists to at least devote more time to presentations than they are currently allotting?

I can think of many established scientists who would benefit enormously from applying just a fraction of the advice in this book. Now, any advice on giving them the book without offending them would be greatly appreciated!

This is a must have book for anyone looking to learn and improve their skills in presenting their science in research papers, posters and talks. As a graduate student, I have found the book to be very useful in several areas. I have outlined some of these key areas below.

1. Comprehensive but not overwhelming: The book is thorough as it goes over the details on many aspects of data presentation in papers and talks of many different formats. The chapters are well laid out and one can easily follow the logic throughout all the chapters. Each of the chapters concludes with a summary of DON'Ts and DOs which is SUPER useful.
Note that with such detail, you will most likely have to revisit the chapters a couple of times to try out some of the recommendations. I think this is great as you will end up using the book frequently thus it won't just collect dust.

2. The Visual Power: The visual demonstrations are very powerful. They instantly make a point which would otherwise take an additional page to describe. Many important points are highlighted and in bold to make it easier for the reader to follow. This is important as I have revisited many chapters to remind myself of several critical points I may have forgotten.
Note that the author does not give explicit instructions on how to use Illustrator, Keynote or Powerpoint to achieve some of the design features illustrated in the chapters. This is beyond the scope of the book plus the programs already have detailed manuals elsewhere.

3. It's inspiring and surprisingly fun: You can tell very easily that the author cares a lot about helping others communicate their science more effectively. Some of the chapters include additional recommended readings, useful quotes about design, and even some short stories to drive home some critical points. There are many tricks I never even considered which the author inspires you to try.

On final analysis, this book is very useful for scientists across many fields and levels. I especially recommend it for graduate students early on in their training.

This book is a real treasure for biomedical scientists who need to communicate their findings, ideas and plans. Lot's of great suggestions for graphic presentations in manuscripts, posters and onscreen presentations. I routinely recommend it to attendees of my workshops for academic scientists. Indeed, in some of my presentations I show a couple of examples from the book, with full credit to Matt Carter and a link to the book, of course!

I have read most of the books out on presentations. This is absolutely at the top of the list. It hits on the right notes for scientists--it the message that communicates the work! I coach a lot of scientist--very, very smart people and this book will be at my side for reference.

Practical and well written. Highly recommended.

Nice book; but I have one question: is this sentence in the book correct? "The data seems too good to be true" (data is plural)
