Like Scurr's textbook, Hemmings explores the scientific fundamentals that lie at the core of the field of anesthesiology. There is a detailed examination the physiology, chemistry, biology, and even mathematics of anesthesia. This is not the textbook for someone looking for clinical guidance on a complex case. This is the book to turn to if one is interested in exploring the & and how' of anesthesia. The figures are among the finest I've ever seen in any textbook.

Cyril Scurr was one of the luminaries of modern anaesthesia. In September 1951, with his senior colleague Robert Machray, he attended King George VI for a lung operation by Sir Clement Price-Thomas, the surgery taking place in a drawing room at Buckingham Palace. Scurr provided continuous monitoring throughout the procedure.
