Vladimir Zelevinsky is Professor at the Department of Physica and Astronomy and National Superconducting Cyclotron laboratory at Michigan State University, USA. He graduated from Moscow University and worked for many years at the Budker Institute of Nuclear Physics in Novosibirsk where he got his Candidate of Science and highest Doctor of Science degrees (equivalent to a PhD).

Quantum Physics book.

This two-volume set can be naturally divided into two semester courses, and contains a full modern graduate course in quantum physics. The idea is to teach graduate students how to practically use quantum physics and theory, presenting the fundamental knowledge, and gradually moving on to applications, including atomic, nuclear and solid state physics, as well as modern subfields, such as quantum chaos and quantum entanglement. The book starts with basic quantum problems, which do not require full quantum formalism but allow the student to gain the necessary experience and elements of quantum.

together, the two volumes of this book are very thurogh, going through a wide range of topics. this does mean that the author doesn't take a great deal of time to explain each topic as one might like. sometimes it seemed that in order for this book to be usefull one must first be somewhat aquainted with the material before reading up on it, meaning that it was often more usefull to read the book after class, rather than before...

on another note, in many sections there were several worked out examples that were helpful, whereas in other sections the examples were more tangential to the main piont, and sometimes distracting from the material. usually the examples did serve to bring real world problems to light, and showed how the material could be applied in a very real and usefull way.

the author is currently teaching quantum mecanincs at the graduate level at michigan state university.

this book came out halfway through the two course series, so this review is based on the second semester of the two courses. perhaps the first semesters worth of reading would have helped suplement what we are trying to learn now.

(I was also dissapointed in the publisher for making this book so expensive, and not offering a hardcover option)

I would rather call this 2 volume book smth like "Encyclopaedia of Modern Quantum Mechanics". The reason is simple: you can find in these 2 volumes an introduction practically to any modern quantum application: quantum optics, chaos, entanglement... which is much better and certainly more reliable than web info.
You should, however, invest into your education ;)
