It's about Vietnam and the Midwest, and Vaughn Rhomer, an old man who, tries in his own fumbling way to be free. James Waller, Robert James Waller.

Most people don't run out the back door of a place called the Rainbow Bar in Dillon, Minnesota, with someone they don't even know, get in a pickup truck, drive all day, and end up without any clothes on in a motel room. But that's what Texas Jack Carmine did with Linda Lobo. It was the kind of thing Jack was famous for doing. The people who knew Texas Jack Carmine - such as songwriter Bobby McGregor and Jack's uncle Vaughn Rhomer back in Iowa - called him God's only freeborn soul, rider of the summer roads, traveler of the far places. Where he was headed with dark-haired, long-legged Linda was not just back to his one-horse Texas ranch. It was somewhere he had never been: face to face with his own heart and the wild, strange things that live there. Border Music is the story of Jack and Linda, of long, hot days on a high desert ranch, nights wild with loving beneath West Texas skies, and times when their relationship tears them both apart. It's about Vietnam and the Midwest, and Vaughn Rhomer, an old man who, tries in his own fumbling way to be free. It's about men and women who work hard and care intensely, about romance and the passion that you only find once...and you never stop wanting to find again.

Every book that James Waller has published come across with a lot of relevance to places I've lived and experiences I've had. It helps when reading Waller to look at all the books he's written and check the publication dates and then read them in order as they relate to each other with some of the characters being the lead and more developed in one and then another person in another.

This was a audio tape I had a few years' ago, lent to a friend asking her to return when finished, but only receive 1 of the tapes back. Thank you. This story is read by the author and I wanted to keep it in my library.

Extremely boring book. Was very disappointed considering he wrote Bridges Of Madison County.

a fun read, didn't realize it was written by the same author as Bridges of Madison County, which I didn't like.

Great
This is the story of Jack, a Vietnam veteran, and Linda, a beautiful, kind woman whom he meets in Iowa and takes her to his small west Texas ranch. They start as ecstatic lovers, but unfortunately, Jack suffers from an extreme case of PTSD that sends him into bizarre, reckless behavior which eventually drives Linda away. She takes her small daughter and ultimately marries a business executive in Iowa. She misses Jack and will never forget him, but she opts to save her sanity and her future. It is also the story of Rhomer, Jack's uncle, who ultimately opts to adopt a pitiful stray dog in New Orleans and heads for life on the beach in Mexico, abandoning his mundane job, and of Bobby McGregor, a successful musician whose life Jack saved in Vietnam. In the end, both of them miss finding Jack, who is off on one of his wanderlusting trips, and that is that.

Nobody can write like Robert James Waller. This novel is a perfect example of "the singer, not the song"; or rather, "the writer, not the story". The story is dreary and has no real conclusion, but the lyrical, unique prose makes it more than worth the reading. It is a story of lost and found, the magic and mystery of life, the inexorable passage of time...read it and see for yourself. The only novel I can compare it to in style is Larry McMurtry's "All My Friends Are Going to Be Strangers"--there is the same type of beautiful, poetic prose and the same puzzles of life. That one has sequels, and I'm eager to see if this novel, published in 1993, has had a followup. There is much still to go.
