No matter which series one reads, Sandford never disappoints. The plots are exquisitely intricate, the dialogue is so spot-on that about half a dozen times each book I read a passage to my wife, the character development for each major and most minor characters is satisfying , and something that is very important to me, you could pick up any of the books as your first experience with the author and he will fill in enough of the back story that you don't feel like you are missing something. Sandford is in my personal pantheon along with Michael Connelly, Thomas Perry, Lawrence Block, and the late great Robert Parker and Lawrence Sanders.

If you've read the 1st Prey book and liked it, you will like the whole series. Some books are better than others, but I enjoy reading them all. Wicked Prey is a good book. I suggest reading all the books in order because the characters follow in each book, and they grow in each book. Their lives are changing, just like ours do in real life. John Sanford is a great writer, and this is just one of his series. ********** 10 stars. Keep up the great work. I'm looking forward to each new book.

John Sandford's character Lucas Davenport has been through his share of adventures over the years and we have seen him gradually age and mellow (to a certain extent, although he is still tough).

In his latest offering, Sandford gives a lead storyline to Davenport's adopted daughter, Letty, who finds out that someone her father put into a wheelchair years prior is back for vengeance. Letty decides to try and avert her father getting into trouble by investigating the bad guy herself through the help of his prostitute girlfriend.

The main storyline involves the 2008 Republican convention where there are security concerns and Davenport must look into whether someone is planning on assassinating the presidential hopeful. Is the possible assassination just a red herring to a cunning gang planning greater spoils?

Is this a good book? Yes and no. It is John Sandford so we know the writing will be solid and he will deliver his usual action but the negative is that this novel just felt a little worn to me. The usual humour was lacking, the storyline itself seemed a bit flat and Letty came across as quite unlikeable.

I would put this as one of Sandford's weaker offerings.

I read this book in one evening, not as much because I loved the content but the characters kept drawing me in. I really enjoyed the way he is developing Lettie's character. She is still the same little girl, but, growing up like we would expect her to be. What I didn't realize until the second chapter that Randy Whitcomb was the pimp that Lucas beat up in one of his first or second books, and got fired for it! Very Cool the way he brought him back!
Thanks again,
Sandford

Davenport never fails to hook me. This was no exception, and better than many. Even though one got away, the bad guys all got their just deserves. Highly recommended.

As many of these as he's written, Sandford is still at his best. You've got a machine gun, poetic justice, a trail of gold bars, all this in the context of the Republican convention. It only matters because Sandford can really write. Flawless.

This one tells about Letty's adoption. That's only a tiny part of the story. This one had me guessing right till the end!!!
very interesting book, like the way John writes and being from the twin cities area it's more like being there, know where they are talking about. Always an interesting twist and surprises toward the end. Bad thing is it keeps my interest, I can't put the book so I finish it quickly than have to go to the next one, good marketing!!!!
