Geraldine and Lisa struck up a friendship at the Cape Cod Writers' Conference in 2008. The following year, Lisa was awarded a Surdna Arts Teaching Fellowship to travel to Ireland and work with Geraldine. In a little cottage in Connemara, they wrote and forged a link between their lives. In October of 2009, Geraldine travelled to Connecticut to teach workshops, read, and experience Lisa's landscape. They explored themes of culture, folklore, flora and fauna through a series of poems of call and response, weaving in and out of their own internal and external landscape. The result is a co-authored book, The Other Side of Longing (Arlen House/Syracuse University Press, 2011).

For me, this transatlantic poetry collaboration evokes visceral memories of visitng Ireland years ago. The richness of language in the writing of Lisa Taylor and Geraldine Mills creates a deep, immersive experience for the reader. While both poets shine a light on the warmth and richness of Ireland, Geraldine's poems also gives us a taste of how various aspects of our American lives may strike a visitor from abroad.

From the first poem, "The Centre Cannot Hold," to the last "Moving Landscape," this book shows two very different poetic voices in conversation. We get to glimpse Geraldine Mills and Lisa Taylor getting to know each other through their writing and it's a delight to watch this relationship unfold, through the eyes of these two wonderful poets!

Beautiful poetry that spans an ocean. A friendship between two poets is born and grows despite the distances in their lives. As they craft their poems and encourage one another, they inspire their readers to grow along with them. The poems, "Threshold," "The Other Side of Longing," and "Moving Landscape" are quiet lessons in poem-making. A lovely look at two women artists at work.

Wonderful the way their voices call to one another, directly and indirectly. The images of Carna will stay with me forever.
