THE WEST DOOR By Alfred Corn. 75 pp. New York: Viking. The book is very long. Alfred Corn's fifth collection of poetry, ''The West Door,'' reminds us that some poets still value formalism and intellectual rigor, and it underscores what is enduring in such poetry, as well as its limitations. Mr. Corn's sensibility is cultivated and ironic, and he is aware, in a restrained and gentlemanly fashion, of mutability and shadow lurking at the edges of the familiar. Many poems evoke a lovely sort of sadness, keening, as they weave disparate images swiftly and rhythmically into whole cloth. But the collection must be read in pieces or it tends to bog down in circling and self-enclosure.
