Rabbi of Lud (American Literature (Dalkey Archive)) Paperback.

Rabbi of Lud (American Literature (Dalkey Archive)) Paperback. I wondered why I wasn't wild about this book the way so many readers are. I found it to be slow going.

How does Stanley Elkin make magic, book after book? Well, sentence after sentence, word after word, is ho.

How does Stanley Elkin make magic, book after book? Well, sentence after sentence, word after word, is how. By an unappeasable curiosity about the country's and the heart's works is ho. A bountiful novel about the mind of a most uncommon City Commissioner of Streets, The MacGuffin flies through the air with the greatest ease while keeping a quizzical eye open for every spiritual pothole, psychological traffic snarl, and stuck cultural stoplight.

There was a time when Davis Cup winner Chris Monte had it all. Now, down and out in Dade County, restringing racquets at a South Beach tennis shop and hiring himself out for an occasional lesson, he's dead broke. Then, along comes Elizabeth Jones, a mousy student with an irresistible proposition: fifty thousand dollars in exchange for marrying her. As sole beneficiary of the Valentine.

Surrounded by cemeteries in the flatlands of New Jersey, the small town of Lud is sustained by the business of death. In fact, with no synagogue and no congregation, Rabbi Jerry Goldkorn has only one true responsibility: to preside over burial services for Jews who pass away in the surrounding cities. But after the Arctic misadventures that led him to Lud, he wouldn't want to live (or die) anywhere else.

As the only living child in Lud, his daughter Connie has a different opinion of this grisly city, and she will do anything to get away from it--or at least liven it up a bit. Things get lively indeed when Connie testifies to meeting the Virgin Mary for a late-night romp through the local graveyards.

New Jersey to Alaska and back. A novel with surprising turns and twists and delightfully bizarre characters. Elkin exposes our humanness with abandon.

The novel settled me in for a day's worth of delightful chuckles. The laughs never reached loud and boistrous but were always simmering around the edges. I wanted to share it immediately with a couple of friends. I look forward to reading other Elkin readings. Another Jewish novel that leads me to want to read more about this ancient culture.

gift, didn't read, came as advertised or better

I read this funny and touching book years ago, when it came out. It's a great introduction to a brilliant but sometimes difficult comic novelist--aside from Criers & Kibitizers, perhaps, this is his most accessible work. The mensch at the heart of the story, formerly the chief rabbi of the Alaskan pipeline project, is a joy to be around, and every scene is deft and vividly imagined. Spend a little time with the rabbi of Lud, you won't regret it.

Yes, it's uneven, but what a wonderful, wild, funny book. Probably helps to be Jewish, which I am not, but I loved it anyway. delightful
