If you've heard or read about the character but never seen any of the actual work- and are interested in the history of graphic art this is a pretty decent introduction to the artist and type of scenarios that resonated with people 'back then.' Interesting piece of the history of graphic art story telling.

Herriman diguises his work as comic art but it is really very serious, philosophical even. "Do my eye deceive me, or do I deceive my eye?" says Krazy in one episode. This question frames central questions in art, epistemology and even Einsteinian and post-Einsteinian physics. That is just one example from many. His art is also beautiful and sophisticated, though disguising itself as silly stuff. It is NOT silly, of course. He uses some of the same color strategies as one finds in some of late Goya's strange and beautiful paintings. Herriman is no lightweight though he is heavily disguised so that no one need notice what he's really up to.

This is a great intro to the surreal world of Krazy Kat. If you started with the Al Brodax cartoons which were true to the Koconino County setting you will love this and get more books. And if you never read of the adventures of Kat and Ignatz mouse and Offisa Pup you are in for a treat. Enjoy!

This is landmark stuff. Full of ambiguity, wonderfully playful with language, amazing scenery, some profound philosophical musings. All lovers of comic strips should get into George Herriman and Krazy Kat -- a true genius.

Herriman was undoubtedly a genius, and this volume provides a terrific introduction to his work. But I was disappointed when I saw that Herriman's name does not appear on the spine of this new edition. Even though reprints of classic Krazy Kat strips -- all by Herriman -- make up the bulk of the book, the names of three of the volume's compilers are featured prominently on the spine, but Herriman's is not. A small complaint, admittedly. Personally, I'd rather have seen the name of the artist there, instead of -- or at the very least in addition to -- the names of three people I've never heard of.
