Longarm Giant 17: Longarm and the Calgary Kid. Tabor Evans.

Longarm told the big-boned, red-haired, middle-aged woman sitting behind the long, varnished oak desk in the lobby of the Diamondback Hotel. She had thin lips and close-set eyes in a fleshy face that might have at one time been mildly pretty, though never beautiful. She wore a puce-colored silk dress with puffy sleeves and a scalloped cream collar. The dress fit her much too tightly, accentuating too many large bumps and rolls.

I have been a fan of western novels for many years and my favorite series has been the Longarm books. I have read a great number of the more than 400 books in this series and liked most of them. This one begins with a shoot-out inside an old church. As always, Custis Long, Federal Deputy Marshal was assigned by his boss, Billy Vail, Federal Marshal out of Denver to try and keep the peace between two factions in New Mexico.

The argument has to do with ownership of a parcel of land between Don Montoya and the McCabe’s ranch. I never like to give away too much information when reviewing a novel because it spoils it for anyone who might want to read it. If you are a Longarm fan you know there is going to be lots of twists, turns, shoot-outs and of course lusty action.

This is a well-written tale with many good and bad characters as Custis begins working with the local badge packer, Sheriff Walcott to keep the lid on a tense situation in which a trigger happy cowboy might start a shooting war. Like many Longarm tales, the true killer and villain is not always who you might think it is which kind of keeps you guessing until the end.

If you are a Longarm fan you may want to check out this adult western tale.

Usual good plot by Evans. Unlike several other westerns I read there are no typos indicating excellent proofing of the book.
