To anyone who, like me, has heard of Sholom Aleichem, and is probably familiar with his character Tevye the Dairyman from the successful 'Fiddler on the Roof. His first book, Sherwood Anderson (1951), made a substantial impression on his contemporaries and firmly established his reputation as a critic.

The Best of Shalom Al. .Sholom Aleichem's narratives were notable for the naturalness of his characters' speech and the accuracy of his descriptions o Jewish writer, Sholom Rabinovich (1859-1916), who wrote under the pen name of Sholom Aleichem (שלום עליכם, Hebrew for "peace be upon you"). From 1883 on, Sholom Aleichem produced over forty volumes in Yiddish, thereby becoming a central figure in Yiddish literature by 1890.

These short stories are fun. My simple mind pictures the character in "Fiddler on the Roof" as the narrator of these stories. But it helps to deal with the constant roll-your-eyes kind of humor. The author has a great imagination and the stories are so well told, I constant forget that these are simply stories. The insight to Russian Jewish peasant life in invaluable.

May feel a bit dated, but the style and substance of these stories are true to those times and evoke nostalgia for a life gone for ever...

Haven't finished the book, but while it's clever and amusing, it isn't something I want to read right now. Perhaps later...

Wonderful short stories from a master writer.
I had been trying to get a copy of the book, "The best of Sholem Aleichem" by Sholem Aleichem and had difficulty. Found it on Amazon and ordered it. Book arrived promptly and in excellent condition.

If I'm reviewing the vendor, he gets excellent marks; if I'm reviewing the book and/or the author, he, too, gets excellent marks.
