Pause Between Acts book. I know this is a debut novel, but my experience reading other books from Mavis Cheek before Pause Between Acts led my to expect far more. It's certainly not a book I would recommend to anyone but a big fan, and then probably just for the sake of reading everything in her repertoire.

Mavis Cheek is the author of 15 novels including Mrs Fytton's Country Life . This made me think of your wonderful book, The Lovers of Pound Hill.

The subject of Mavis Cheek's first published novel, Pause between Acts (1988), is an amused look at her own dismay at discovering that a favourite actor, Ian McKellen, was gay. It won the She/John Menzies Prize for a first novel. She wrote it after being advised by a literary agent, Imogen Parker, that comedy was art and that she should forget about her serious novel as she seemed a natural at humour.

Her short stories and travel articles have appeared in various publications and her first book, Pause Between Acts, won the SHE/John Menzies First Novel Prize. She is also the author of Parlour Games, Dog Days, Aunt Margarets Lover, Sleeping Beauties, Getting Back Brahms and Three Men on a Plane.

A portrayal of a divorcee's choice to live alone in happy seclusion which verges on the unreal when she fabricates friendships to protect herself. A chance meeting throws her into the confusion of a sexual comedy of errors which is far removed from the existence she envisaged.
Reviews:
  • thrust
Book in good condition - didn't like the story as much as some of her others
  • Rainbearer
Not up to her other work, poorly edited, and rather a predictable denouement
