Robert Dale Owen (November 7, 1801 – June 24, 1877) was a Scottish-born social reformer who immigrated to the United States in 1825, became a . citizen, and was active in Indiana politics as member of the Democratic Party in the Indiana House of Representatives (1835–39 and 1851–53) and represented Indiana in the . House of Representatives (1843–47).

This book is about my grandfather's (A.A. Brierly) involvement in Owens Valley land sales to Los Angeles during the early 1900's. He was born in Bishop, CA in 1884 and lived his entire life there. He worked 65 years for Inyo County (1905-1970) and was significantly involved with issues regarding land management in Inyo County. This book is much different than others written on the subject of Los Angeles and the Owens Valley as this is a firsthand account from someone who was there, not revisionist history. I hope you enjoy my book.

Based on 1974 paper written by the author, it recounts the stories of long-time Owens Valley relatives and residents. Everyone who has seen the movie "Chinatown" assumes they know the truth about the great California Water Wars of the 1920s. Pearce's book provides another perspective. Rather than the destruction of the Valley, Pearce and the men he interviews, argue that although L.A.'s aggressive water acquisition tactics were harmful, they were paid amply for the land, and in the end, DWP ownership of the Valley has protected it from a worse fate of over development. He even offers some balancing information about the environmental impact of L.A.'s extraction of water from the area -- dust storms, in particular. Choking dust was not new in the arid Owens Valley, Pearce points out, even though the situation was exacerbated by the city's water diversions. Some may not be convinced by this revisionist book, but I found it very useful.
