Hugh Brogan (Author).

Hugh Brogan (Author). It has another advantage – perhaps a more important one – and that is that it was published in 1985, long before the collapse of the Berlin Wall, the end of the Cold War, the many hot wars that America has been involved in after the 9/11 attack. Thus its views of the American past up to 1985 is untainted by the modern events. But that said, this book is out-of-date.

Hugh Brogan was educated at Repton School and Cambridge. First published as The Longman History of the United States of America by Longman 1985

Hugh Brogan was educated at Repton School and Cambridge. He worked on the Economist for two years before his first visit to the United States as a Harkness Fellow in 1962. He was a Fellow of St John’s College, Cambridge, for the period 1963–74 and thereafter, until his retirement in 1998, taught at the University of Essex (he was R. A. Butler Professor of History for the period 1994–8). First published as The Longman History of the United States of America by Longman 1985. Published as The Pelican History of the United States of America in Penguin Books 1986. Reprinted as The Penguin History of the United States of America in Penguin Books 1990.

The persistence of slavery An impressive history of the United States, particularly geared to academic study in framing historical landmarks into chapters. Brogan focuses on Presidential personalities and their impact on the Civil War and Revolution, the Wall Street Crash and the Vietnam War - finishing with Ronald Reagan's dubious political legacy.

British historian Brogan has written a lively narrative history of the United States. With a skilled sense of storytelling and pages loaded with delightful Britishisms, Brogan delivers a personalized narrative that places this book apart fromand abovemost textbooks. We learn, for instance, that Ben Franklin is the American with whom Brogan most fervently wishes to dine in heaven. Since the work was first written for a British audience, it sparkles with new angles on old material, though it seldom challenges the reader to delve more deeply into historical debates.
