Writer Sunnie Empie and photographer Hart W. Empie reveal what it's like to live in the Boulder House, which was designed around an enormous outcrop of weathered granite that sheltered inhabitants from the Stone Age up to about 700 years ago. The text and about 150 color photographs describe the planning and building of the house as well as the Empies' appreciation of the high Sonoran Desert in Arizona, where ancient symbols carved into the rock connect the viewer to the cosmology of the first people in the American southwest. Their story of the design and construction of their unique home is fascinating, but what I most enjoyed was their account of the sundaggers and rock images on their boulder-strewn site, revealed over many seasons of patient observations during solstices. The whole book is an envious adventure in a marvelous place. The text and photos are excellently appropriate to tell this unusual story. It is also very sensitive and respectful of the ancient and contemporary people for whom this site is apparently sacred, which they did not know until the house was built and they lived there long enough for its secrets to be noticed.

We stop and look each time we past by this "Sacred Place". To suddenly realize, as the pile of boulders looms up ahead of the road...there is a house form at the top...well...impressive is too small a word!

The book is complete in every detail. It's well illustrated with photos, drawings and... imagines from ancient peoples. The home for modern people, inside that boulder pile, is beautifully thought out.... How all this came together is a fine story. Buy the book...but plan a visit. You won't be disappointed in either.

Excellence in every aspect; the books condition; quality of paper, photos, history behind the story. That sacred place has me captured spiritually. Very well written.
