Veronica Neave (Author).

Veronica's great grandmother was the first to be diagnosed with breas My husband won Pieces of Me in a goodreads giveaway. Being that it's about a woman and breast cancer, I'm the one that read it. I wasn't sure how I would feel about it, and I put off reading it for so long! Shame on me!

Having to make the same decision I found this book most helpful and really related to many of the thoughts and understandings of the book. It has assisted me with my choice and I feel less alone in what I am going through. Thanks Veronica

I read this book last year when I was waiting on my own BRCA test. Although I appreciated the author's perspective, her description of the "massive pain" after mastectomy scared the living daylights out of me. Totally unecessary. I never had anywhere near the pain she describes, never (my mastectomy was a year ago, recon operations afterwards were also not so terrible). I participate in an online discussion forum for women of high risk and only rarely hear of women who have this much trouble.

I thought the book was great and recommend it to anyone facing BRCA gene mutations and/or mastectomy - but don't think for a moment that you are doomed to incredible pain. I am NOT saying the author exaggerates her own experience - I believe she went thru what she describes. But her experience is (I believe) unusual on that note.

What I CAN relate to is the joy she expresses in how well her reconstruction turned out.

And so I recommend this book - but with a caution to women that the descriptions of post-operative pain are not necessarily what you need to anticipate.
