Jeffers seems to take her mugging child less seriously than she does the lovingly crosshatched horses and foliage, for which pretty is surely the word - a characterization that pinpoints both the pictures' ""classy"" appeal and their limitations. Far more than the sprightly ""Three Jovial Huntsmen,"" this 40-word lullaby was made for Jeffers' sort of reverie. The floral bedspread covering her little gift at the beginning and end becomes a field where she romps on the backs of ""blacks and bays, dapples and grays,"" all of them standing, prancing and resting on the flower tops in a dreamlike revision of natural scale.

I ordered two from this seller. One was nearly perfect, the other was somewhat worn, but still a good deal for the money. This is one of my favorite children's books. I wish it would be reissued so that new copies would be available.

This book is a classic! My 3 year old LOVES the song and the whimsical illustrations!

This came from a classroom and was covered in sharpie (not good condition). It said “Title 1” on the front, so where was this stolen from? Mass produced, paperback copy. Was not the original version which was longer and better showed the art. Was very disappointed to have spent so much on this. :/

Disappointed. Not much to the book. Sold it.

This is one of my favorite childhood books which I still have and treasure. It's a dreamy book about a young girl's love for horses. The intricate illustrations are muted but beautiful and the text is an extension from a children's song by the same name. It is an easy read but will be cherished for many years later. I highly recommend this book as a gift for any young girl.

My sister who is 12 years older than me used to read this book to me all the time even times when she did not want to. This book is for every little girl who dreamed of owning a horse or pony. I recently found an original issue from 1974 in mint condition and it still makes me smile just like a little girl. Thanks for reading my review.

Even before horses had captured me in their enthralling spell, I loved this book. Now I'm 12, and I still love it. Susan Jeffer's wonderful art allows the little girl and the various horses, to be tranformed into my pony and I, dancing across flowers...
This book is beautiful, every little girl should have this book read to them. My parents used read this book to me often before I went to sleep. My dreams were peaceful safe. I have wonderful memories of this book!
