A donkey has fantastic dreams while crossing the desert, and at the end of the day the lady who has been riding on his back gives birth in a cave to a very special. It is a crystal clear, beautifully simple look at the story of Jesus' birth and the journey that led up to it-all as seen through the eyes of the Donkey that carried Mary to Bethlehem. As is usual with Ms. Berger's books, the illustrations are stunning. I am haunted by the forget-me-nots that frame these pages.

75 (Ages 5 to 8) THE DONKEY'S DREAM By Barbara Helen Berger. The book is brisk with bright chill air and teeming with lively motion - the wind buffeting a flock of birds, waves rocking the ship, dogs frisking, the northern lights dancing. The sense of warm fellow-feeling in the midst of the cold is the Christmas message of this thoroughly charming tale. 'The Donkey's Dream'' is a retelling of the Christmas story itself.

A beautifully illustrated story of the Nativity.  He was just an ordinary donkey, but on his back he carried a miracle. He carried the Virgin Mary to Bethlehem on the night she gave birth. Along the way he dreamed he was carrying a city, a ship, a fountain, and a rose. He dreamed he was carrying a lady full of heaven--and he was. Barbara Helen Berger's glowing artwork and lyrical text perfectly convey the beauty and majesty of the story of the Nativity.

My 2 year old loves all Barbara Helen Berger books. Somehow he always asks to re-read over and over her books. Maybe it's the beautiful illustrations or the beautiful, deep stories. Wish there were more kids authors like her out there!

This is the most beautifully illustrated book which shows the caring and compassionate character of donkeys as well as points to the beauty of the relationship within the Holy Family and the promise of the Christ Child. I read this book to the children at our church at Christmas time on the Sunday that we take two miniature donkeys to act as outside greeters.

It's a touching story of the virgin Mary's journey to Bethlehem from the donkey's perspective. It's very simple (not more than a few sentences on each page) yet deep with all the symbolic illustrations of the donkey carrying a city, a fountain, etc. on his back. And Ms. Berger has lovely illustrations.

Darling book for children. Let’s children use their imagination while hearing a familiar story.

It is everything that I wanted and the right price too. Perfect gift! It is better than expected as it is an used item. It came before CHristmas too even though it was expected afterwards. I am very very very pleased with this item. I cry every time I read it. My pastor read from this book during the Children's Christmas Eve Mass one year too. It has such beautiful symbols.

This is our favorite Christmas book for children. Beautiful illustrations reminiscent of Fra Angelico, a simple story yet with profound symbolism. Too bad the book is out of print. I was thankfully able to find a used copy through Amazon.

great book!! I looked for a long time to find this book it was my favorite children's Christmas book and now my daughter will get it for Christmas.
My mother had this book when I was a little girl and I always wanted her to read it to us every Christmas time. I just love the illustrations! And even at a very young age, I would want her to read the authors note at the end that talks about all the symbolism in the pictures. When I got older I would read it to myself on Christmas Eve before going to bed. It is such a beautiful book! I was very excited to be able to buy it this year, so that next year when my baby girl is here for Christmas, I can read it to her and it can be a family keepsake.
