Joy Cowley has two writing desks. Many were used as home-made big books in classrooms. With her husband Terry Coles, she now lives in Featherson, Wairarapa, New Zealand, in a little cottage well suited to a couple of senior citizens; but they still have a house in the Marlborough Sounds where they lived for many years. The desk in the Featherston is a converted bedroom and has a desk overlooking lawn, garden, and children playing in a quiet cul-de-sac.

My students love this story of a little yellow chicken who has a party and none of his friends want to help. He asks his grandmother, The Little Red Hen,what to do. She says not to invite them - eat everything yourself. But the little yellow chicken is a kind chicken and decides to have his friends come anyway. Near instantly, I wondered if "Little Yellow" might be related to "The Little Red Hen" and asked the girl this question. She didn't know "Little Red," but loved "Little Yellow.
