Nadine Bernard Westcott creates a riot of sounds, sights, and giggles for the young and old. As in her other song-to-book adaptations (including Peanut Butter and Jelly and I Know an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly), the lyrics form most of the text, while Westcott's delightfully chaotic watercolors turn the simple song into a hilarious story. The small board book format is ideal for little hands (and teeth).

I chose another children’s book adapted and illustrated by Nadine Bernard Westcott because the material was eye-catching. Watercolors and ink make up the illustrations. Her work once again takes up both pages, which is an excellent idea. It is easy for a child to become easily distracted with a book when the color isn’t the best or perhaps too simple of pictures.

Skip to my Lou, My darling! Left to mind the farm. This book can be read, but it is even better when the text is sung. It is repetitive in style making it conducive to participation by young or slower children

Skip to My (The) Lou" is a popular American partner-stealing dance from the 1840s. It was also a popular lyrical game in Abraham Lincoln's youth in southern Indiana and Kentucky (1826) with verses such as "Hurry up slow poke, do oh do", "I'll get her back in spite of you", "Gone again, what shall I do", and "I'll get another girl sweeter than you". Skip to My Lou" is a simple game of stealing partners (or swapping partners as in square dancing)

This book was advertised as being "new". It had been previously used (in a school library) and was in what I would call "fair" condition. It still had the stickers from the library on it. I was very disappointed, esp. since this book is no longer in print and I have been looking for it for quite some time. I gave this as a gift and had to apologize for the condition. It was one I really wanted the new mom to have because it was one of my favorites when my son was younger.

Got this and all the other sing-along books I could find because my toddler loves to sing them. Worth it for the variety and to be able to sing something other than Miss Mary Mack 20 times a day.

My son loves this book. He first learned about it when his music teacher read it to his class and he asked for it specifically. Perfect four-year-old comedy. We read it often. He loves looking at the pictures to find the humor in the chaos.

I was going to give this book five stars after I got it out of the library. Then I ordered the book from amazon - to be stunned to see that the last SIX pages, some of the funnier ones, are missing! They are:

"Look at the clock, it's a quarter to two. Goodness gracious, what will we do? Hurry quick it's up to you" and showing the animals cleaning up and running back to their paddocks.

The book makes little sense without these.

Cute version of the song. If you sing while reading it, there isn't much time to look at the pictures.

My girls had this book when they were babies and I wanted to get one for my 1 1/2 year old nephew who loves to sing. It is perfect. It was in good condition and shipped fast.

I never get bored singing this to my daughter. The pictures have lots to look at, the rhymes are fun, and because it is a song, my daughter was interested from the first time we openened it. She was 10 months at the time. Now she is 17 months and still loves this book.
This book is cute. It's not as long or "wordy" as I was hoping for but it is still one that my daughters enjoy. Some of the other singing books by the same author are much better such as, Bill Grogan's Goat, Michael Finnegan, and the Eensy Weensy Spider.
