For how much, do you think? What would you guess? Five hundred dollars? . It's happening, the recourse to market mechanisms and market thinking and market solutions, in bigger arenas. Take the way we fight our wars. Did you know that, in Iraq and Afghanistan, there were more private military contractors on the ground than there were . military troops? All around the world, people buy and sell goods in markets. Ted Lewin introduces readers to six unique markets in such diverse places as Madras (India) and Lambertville (New Jersey). In Thailand, selling and buying takes place aboard long thin boats, where people buy fruits with such lyrical names as pomelo and rambutan. Some vendors even cook food right on their boats! Other highlights include a market high up in the Peruvian Andes and a camel market outside of Cairo. Lewin's watercolors have soft edges and very bright colors. The detailed pictures convey the bustling excitement of a market full of interesting goods. Consider pairing this book with Lois Ehlert's Market Day or with any of Norah Dooley's Everybody books (Everybody Cooks Rice / Brings Noodles / Bakes Bread / Serves Soup)

This is a book that is in many classrooms. It takes the child all over the world to places such as Egypt, Bangkok, to Moroccan Brooklyn and Southern New Jersey. It is painted realistically in the manner of photography. The artwork is very nice, soft, interesting. Children will get a good education about many different cultures through this book. It is recommended for the classroom or home-schooled child. Good for second and third grades.
