As a pet owner who home cooks I was thrilled to see Back to Basics, Whole Foods for Healthy Dogs available on Amazon. After extensive research online and with talking to our local vet I had found it almost impossible to find nutritionally balanced recipes.

While slim, the book has everything you need to be able to home cook for a healthy pet. Dr. Lauten gives recipes for beef, poultry, pork and fish, using a variety of fats and vegetables to insure a wide range of choices in feeding. Having the nutritional analysis of each recipe along with feeding guidelines listed is an invaluable tool and that alone makes purchasing this volume a must. Considering I paid over a hundred dollars for a custom recipe, this puts healthy home cooking for a pet into everyone's budget.

Can't wait to try the Sweet Paw-Tato Chips!

Dr. Lauten, from those of us who have to or have chosen to home cook, many thanks.

it's a joke. 30 pages total with have introduction and about author. about 10 recipes that can be found anywhere in the internet. i don't know how amazon allows such a fraud to be sold. in that case everyone can put a note and call it book!!! this thing must be removed. this is not a book. it's few pages internet found materials. DON'T BUY.

Back to basics: Whole Foods for Healthy Dogs by Dr. Susan Lauten and Joseph Lascola is an excellent resource for dog owners who would like to cook nutritonally balanced meals for their dogs. As a veterinarian I have received many requests from clients for home-cooked maintenance and specialty diet recipes. Most of the diets found on the internet are not correctly balanced in vitamins, minerals, fats, proteins, and carbohydrates and cannot be fed for any period of time. Dr. Lauten has insured that each diet is correctly balanced, and provides dog owners with easy to use recipes and useful feeding guidelines. Nutritionally balanced healthy treat recipies are also included, as well as several good basic rules to follow when feeding dogs. Resources for purchasing some of the ingredients are also included. This is an excellent resource for dog owners and for veterinarians. Can't wait for the rest of the volumes to be published. Dr. C

I can't believe this costs what it does. It's a super-slim booklet containing a handful of recipes, each of which calls for 7 brand-name supplements per serving.

The handful of recipes has been sandwiched between a small bit of other, peripheral (or even at times non-essential, self-evident or silly) information, such as "Water bowls should be washed...at every meal" and, "Be sure one dog is not keeping another from eating". All told, it's just 23 pages of actual content for $14.23. Not much.

It also doesn't at all explain the nutritional requirements for dogs or any of the knowledge behind the recipes, but only drops them in front of you, so if you're looking to truly understand feeding your dog, you won't be helped here (beyond stuff like the old, 'dogs can't eat onions').

Basically, it reads like a brief list of recipes that they tried to plump up just enough to call a book. It's an issue when you consider that substantial books costing much less actually contain 200-300 pages of in-depth information on the subject. There's nothing wrong with a pamphlety book; as long as the price reflects the brevity.

If you prefer to get a true, full book on a subject for a $14.23 price tag, you'll probably be happier with something else.

A terrible book! The recipes are filled out with high processed carbs like pasta. absolutely nothing insightful nor functional for canines. And it can't be described as a book, its more a multipage leaflet!

This book has several recipes to help dogs stay healthy. One point to make is that the recipes require the addition of specific suppliments that need to be ordered. However, I have most of the food items on hand already. The suppliments are an up-front expense, but they will last a very long time as very little of each suppliment is used in cooking. I baked a chicken last night for one of the recipes. Half goes to the dog, half I will eat. Also, organic whole foods plus the suppliments will actually save money compared to organic dog food.

Susan Lauten previously provided a recipe for Lucy who had renal failure. She kept in touch with us and through her efforts we were able to have an additional year with our beloved family member.
Quick read and easy simple recipes to i only just wish there were more recipes. I would recommend this book
