Anselm Kiefer Aperiatur Terra. The title of the exhibition, 'Aperiatur Terra', is a quotation from the Book of Isaiah, which translates as ‘let the earth be opened’ and continues ‘and bud forth a saviour and let justice spring up at the same time’. These contrasting themes of destruction and re-creation, violent upheaval and spiritual renewal underpin much of Kiefer’s work.

Anselm Kiefer's London exhibition at White Cube, 'Aperiatur Terra', takes a quote from the . Aperiatur terra et germinet salvatorem, et institia oriatur simul' translates as, 'Let the earth be opened and bud forth a saviour, and let justice spring up at the same time'.

Anselm Kiefer's London exhibition at White Cube, 'Aperiatur Terra', takes a quote from the Book of Isaiah as its title and, in doing so, conjures up images of destruction and re-creation, apocalyptic trauma and spiritual renewal with originality and drama.

Sir Norman Rosenthal (born 8 November 1944) is a British independent curator and art historian. From 1970 to 1974 he was Exhibitions Officer at Brighton Museum and Art Gallery. In 1974 he became a curator at the Institute of Contemporary Arts, London, leaving in 1976. The following year, in 1977, he joined the Royal Academy in London as Exhibitions Secretary where he remained until his resignation in 2008.

Anselm Kiefer ranks among the best-known post World War II European artists . Among the earlier treasures are Kiefer s artist s books, which are reproduced here in unprecedented depth and which contain in their rough directness so much of the lyricism with which he approaches scale and material complexity. With original texts by Norman Rosenthal, Bonnie Clearwater, and Joseph Thompson, this is a beautiful document of a significant collection and a definitive celebration of one of the most important artists working anywhere today.
