Magnificent Obsession. The moral and intellectual relativism evident here makes other arguments in the book appear learned in comparison. Nowhere in the volume is there recognition of how the moral vision embedded in that conscience propelled civic good. One need only recall 19th-century abolitionism or agitation for women's rights, to say nothing of the more recent civil rights movement, to question Mr. Kovel's assertions.

BooksMagnificent Obsessions. The ultimate termite artist, according to Harvey, is Douglas Sirk, the intellectual German émigré assigned by Universal to film a string of soap operas (''Magnificent Obsession,'' ''Written on the Wind'') starring an unformed mannequin named Rock Hudson. Harvey interviewed Sirk in Switzerland in 1977, and his reminiscence on their talk, which ranged from Hegel to chicken farming in the San Fernando Valley, is an unlikely treat.
