Your deeply loving Emily Everyone knows the 'Twelve days of Christmas', but not as rewritten by John Julius Norwich in this delightful correspondence, which records the daily thank-you letters from one increasingly bemused young lady to her unseen admirer. And who but Quentin Blake could exploit the full comic possibilities of this hilarious debacle as first birds, then maids and finally the full percussion section of the Liverpool Philharmonic create mayhem in the calm of an English country Christmas? An English Folk Christmas: Christmas Cheer.

TWELVE DAYS OF CHRISTMAS (A Correspondence) by John Julius Norwich. Mummy says she wants us to use the rings to 'wring' their necks - she's only joking, I think; though I know what she means. But I love the rings.

As she laid a new one, I raised myself on one elbow-Cassandra still slumbering in the neighbouring bed-and whispered, What is the hour?. A little past seven by the hall clock, she replied ou be wanting tea, ma’am?. This is the dignity that age has conferred upon me: at nine-and-thirty, I am to be addressed as ma’am.

One of my kids got this for Christmas at school decades ago. It got worn out, fell apart, and since they were so distraught, I have been looking for a new copy ever since. I know they will be well pleased to be reading this to my grandkids, and to have it back in the cookie baking madness that leads up to the holiday.

What a great reminder that it is never too late to take a long, hard look at your famliy history and find ways to have the relationhips YOU want. Not that you inherited, or that just drifted into place, or that you are stuck in a rut with. But truly loving relationships that feed your spirit and are open to the unexpected.

This book takes a journey of opportunity that every one of us would love to have - if only I could re-live those special days with my loved ones. If only I could wind back the clock and have a chance to do it again. Not "just" a Christmas book! An insightful story that encourages and inspires. A great book for teens, especially those struggling with how to be honest with your parents about who you REALLY are.

I enjoy a feel-good read as much as the next person, but what I like more, is a feel-good book that prompts me to be a do-good person. It is so easy to let the dramas and distractions of life preoccupy us. Twelve Days of Christmas gives us a wake-up call--that hollers "Don't sleepwalk through your life! Don't settle for surviving, thinking that there'll be a better time down the road, to genuinely connect to the people around you. Remember "Cats in the Cradle" by Jim Croce? That could be the theme song of this novel. Don't wait! Don't hold a resentment so long that your hand and heart petrify around it. Sure, family members can be difficult, judgmental, withholding, and moody--but there's likely a treasure within them, if you get past the crap and declaw the family secrets. Great book. Better than that, great kick-in-the-butt book, for prompting readers to reach harder for the love that might be all around them!
