The fact that awareness of breath improves our riding will not be a surprise to most riders. Changing breathing patterns and thereby acquire a heightened communication with the horse, however, may seem so esoteric and out of reach to riders, that sadly many will never try.

The gift to communicate with animals is often called `whispering.' While those truly and innately gifted individuals have multi-faceted skill sets, much of their connection stems from the simple power of breath -- and that can be learned.

Jenny Rolfe's book inspires readers to explore the realm of possibilities opened to us through such a simple process as how we breathe. For many of us, especially as we get older, our breathing patterns change. We start breathing higher in our chest, called thoracic breathing. By its very nature this `high breathing' changes our posture and center of balance, which leads to increased tension and ultimately sends confusing signals to the horse. Many instructors will just tell their students to breathe. But if their breathing pattern is poor, so too will be the results. On the other hand, Jenny talks about low diaphragmatic breathing. This `deep belly' breathing centers our balance in the pelvic core, which promotes relaxation, projects calm, and focuses energy messages to the horse. As Jenny says, this breathing pattern develops the type of posture and composure that horses look for in a leader.

Using a series of moving stories and student accounts, Jenny describes the willingness of the horse to connect to and follow the power of breath. She gives examples and exercises for readers to learn and improve their diaphragmatic breathing. For those new to the concept, the breathing exercises may seem too simple to hold value. Jenny encourages patience while readers practice the exercises and find how their horses may start to respond differently. It is a leap of faith to find their own `a-ha' riding moment that will then define their journey with horses going forward. I have been on a similar path to Jenny, so I can tell you that once you feel connected to your horse through breath and energy, the rewards grow with each and every day. Jenny's guidance in this book is brilliant.

I took my time with this book. I used every exercise as she describes. As a result, I improved my own understanding of how to use breath in the saddle, working around my horses, and incorporating loose, what we call liberty work in the United States. You will want this book close at hand long after you have finished reading. For both inspiration and education I recommend Breathe Life into Your Riding for riders at all levels and all disciplines.

Omg I love this book. I've had horses for over 5 years. I learn something new everyday with them but this book has opened up a whole new world for me and my equine friends. The techniques are truly amazing and worked well on my most challenging mare. I highly recommend it.

Breathe Life into Your Riding came up as a suggestion when I was doing a search for new yoga books. One of the classes I share is Yoga for Horse Lovers. Breathe Life into Your Riding resonated with me immediately. When I finished my first reading I was gobsmacked "WOW, WOW, WOW PLUS!" The wows were building up as I progressed through each chapter. Beyond that words are inadequate to describe this masterpiece. I have been recommending it since I first discovered it and each moment I am even more excited about it and share this freely.

It is beautifully written & illustrated, challenges the reader with its simple truths and honest application examples. Although chapters are progressive, it is the type of book you can allow to fall open wherever and begin reading from there. You are challenged to discover more.
