Dog training is the application of behavior analysis which uses the environmental events of antecedents and consequences to modify the behavior of a dog, either for it to assist in specific activities or undertake particular tasks, or for it to participate effectively in contemporary domestic life. While training dogs for specific roles dates back to Roman times at least, the training of dogs to be compatible household pets developed with suburbanization in the 1950s.

Basic dog obedience training consists of 5 key commands

Basic dog obedience training consists of 5 key commands. Having a trained dog isn’t the same as having a balanced dog, but if your dog knows a few basic commands, it can be helpful when tackling problem behaviors - existing ones or those that may develop in the future. So where do you start with dog obedience training? You could take a class, but it’s not necessary; you can do it yourself. In fact, with the right attitude, it can be fun for both you and your dog! Sit. This is one of the easiest dog obedience commands to teach, so it’s a good one to start with.

  • Sorryyy
I have a Pit Bull with fear issues and bought this book to help her think differently. The instructions and pictures are easy to follow and practice. As always, go by your dogs pace not yours, and we do tricks 5 days a week in 10 min sessions. Then reinforce the skill learned here and there through out the day. It's helped her confidence and behavior a lot. The books is set up in sections of easy to hard but allows easy skipping around as you work with your dog. It's a great tool for teaching concentration and listening skills for your dog. Plus the bond enhanced with them and it makes training time more like, " I'm going to show off how smart I am". All sorts of different skills are included for basic things to most advanced and everything in between.

Mostly clear step-by-step directions for teaching skills to dogs that go way beyond your usual sit, down and stay. Good explanations for teaching targeting, pushing and pulling. As a dog trainer I recommend this one to other trainers and dog owners who have already mastered the basics.
  • FreandlyMan
I love this book for teaching my dogs advanced tricks. The instructions and pictures are very clear and easy to understand.
  • Dont_Wory
This is an easy to use book. The pictures are good. Any age can train using this book.
  • Arashilkis
It got there in the due time and the book was well preserved.

This is a great book for dog owners (and other animal trainers) who have mastered the basics of clicker training and simple commands like "sit" and "down." This book skips over all basic behaviors and gets right to the point, teaching the principles of target training and similar intermediate skills. Cement basic skills with verbal commands (finally!!) and teach your dog how to close a door with his or her nose... And all of the above is taught in the first 20 pages! It only gets better from there! I can't recommend this book more :) Have fun with your best buddy using this book!

This book isn't for people who don't already know about positive training using a clicker or marker word. If you're looking for a primer on positive training, try The Power of Positive Dog Training, and try searching YouTube for "how to clicker train your dog." If you like DVDs, I also recommend Best Puppy Tricks - DVD--it's not just for puppies and it's worth every penny :)

100% practical book, clear and direct. No useless explanations
Wonderfully printed, lots of great pictures and descriptions. I love that the author is direct on when and how to teach this advanced work. While many dog owners don't get past sit, this gives even basic clicker trainers the opportunity to hone their skill. Loved it!!!
