When I took my California state journeymans test I was also taking a test for my formal apprenticeship which was way harder being an industrial test. It had a lot of practical questions but a good majority of it was code related and they wanted you to write where in the code you found your answer. This made it way harder, because even if you know the answer it still took a lot of time to find exactly where in the code it was at.

I knew going in to studying I would have to find every answer and so I forced myself to look up every question in this book. I went through it twice and what this did for me was to basically stumble across just about every code while looking for my answer. After going through it twice, I was pretty fast at finding answers and knew just about where everything was or could narrow it down to 2 or 3 sections. I highly recommend doing it this way for open book exams, just going into the test based on knowledge and some work with the code book will not help you. I knew some very good electricians struggle taking this because they did not know how to work through the code. That's all they're really testing you on, can you find codes before you install something, not necessarily a well rounded electrician. Honestly, I touch a code book maybe twice a year, but I'm an industrial maintenance electrician, we typically do not do construction. Also they do not require you to be state certified, but I figured i already had to study for my apprentiship final, might as well kill 2 birds.

I studied using this exam prep to point out my weak areas. It is more of an exam prep than a study guide, as it is mostly a bank of questions from actual exams. This book is not to train you on how to be an electrican, it is to train you on how to think like the exam so that you pass the exam. It also takes the time and care to point out the changes from the NEC 2005 to the 2008.

I passed the practice timed final exam in the back of the book with an 83, passed the actual exam with an 85. Don't think I would have passed without it.

Highly recomended.

This is the Craftsman brand study guide textbook with CD. The disc is one of the tools used in our Code Review class at the apprenticeship to study for the County Exam. Now you can spend as much time with the disc as you feel you need to prepare yourself for the test before you go spend $100 to take the exam.
