Every book that I've read has been insightful and encouraging. This book is a very short treatise on how to be open to the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives. He draws from the Bible and the writings of many saints. I found this book so helpful because it is easy for me to get caught up in a lot of the moral rules involved with following Christ, to the point where I start to lose focus on Christ Himself.

Jacques Philippe, p. 21 Taken from "In the School of the Holy Spirit". Many men keep the commandments in the way sick men take medicine: more from fear of dying in damnation than for joy of living according to our Savior’s will. Just as some persons dislike taking medicine, no matter how pleasant it is, simply because it is called medicine, so there are some souls who hold in horror things commanded simply because they are commanded.

How to start? I've read many books on the subject of spirituality and this is simply one of the best I have ever had the good fortune to read. The author's main premise is that holiness is not something human beings can accomplish but we shouldn't give up hope because it's really just a matter of trusting in the power of the Holy Spirit to work through you one moment at a time paying attention to divine inspiration and acting on it, expressing continual praise, gratitude and thanksgiving. The "method of holiness" is harmoniously supported by various quotes from many famous saints and doctors of the church the net effect of which is: you will be convinced that not only are you called to holiness/to be a saint but that it's your natural birthright as a human being and it's actually an enjoyable ,albeit challenging experience. I've noticed a change in myself as well...being more willing to accept God's grace/presence in my daily life which God seems to enjoy rewarding with more grace and inspiration.....I'm starting to understand what St. Paul meant when he said: "It is no longer I who live but Christ who lives in me." Come Holy Spirit!!!

This is an extremely helpful book for anyone seeking to learn and understand how to listen to the promptings of the Holy Spirit. For me, many things were not new, but I had never seen all of these things together in one place clearly outlining the ways in which we can identify the voice of the Holy Spirit. It is a very easy read and one that I will re-read again.
