2008 marks the fiftieth anniversary of Lois LeBar's classic Christian education text, Education That is Christian. During her tenure as a professor at Wheaton College, LeBar wrote several influential texts, including Children in the Bible School (1952) and Focus on People in Church Education (1968). To briefly summarize, the book proposes an educational approach that is inner, active and continuous, and disciplined. Learning was to be "inner" in that it focused initially upon student needs and desires, using these impulses to help them see their need for God's truth.

LeBar is perhaps best known for her 1958 text, Education that is Christian, a book-length philosophy of educational ministry that . Lois Emogene LeBar was born in Olean, New York on October 28, 1907 to Roscoe and Alta LeBar.

Is there a distinctive Christian system of education? Lois LeBar shows that there is such a system, and she defines it clearly. Her aim in this book is to help teachers discover the distinctive Christian system of education and to help Christians produce literature and visual aids from a Scriptural viewpoint. In order to reach Scriptural conclusions, the reader is led through the process of studying the methods of the Teacher "come from God," the Old Testament wilderness school, the emphases of Paul's major sermons in Acts and ofhis epistles, the example of the life of David. From these sources is derived the nature of the teaching-learning process, the relation of authority and creativity, the relation of the human and Divine teachers, and the implementation of these principles in structuring curriculum units and lessons.Dr. LeBar emphasizes that intimate personal experience in the Lord should go together with Biblical facts and doctrine. Here is a book so overflowing with spiritual reality and power that it cannot help but bring new light and a life of transformed service to everyone who reads it.

I bought this for teachers in our Christian Academy. Great source for teachers who are looking to get their students onto God's plan for their life.

This is an outstanding book made even more relevant and useful thanks to James Plueddeman's insightful observations.
  • Rude
This book is a classic. It is one of the few textbooks that I kept from my undergraduate education. It also is one of the few books on Christian Education that I found useful as a missionary in Nigeria. I hope this book never goes out of print. When does the teaching method of Jesus go out of style?
